God is All Joy: The Life of St. Teresa of the Andes
Jennifer Moorcroft
Teresa of Jesus of the Andes, Chile's first canonized saint, was a vibrant young woman who loved sports and music and had a wide circle of friends. She entered Carmel and died only eleven months later at the age of nineteen. Each year more than 100,000 visitors flock to her shrine, many of them young people. What is it about this young woman, barely out of school, that draws so many people to her and that is so outstanding that she is now a canonized saint? Because she is one of them, her own people love her. Young people love her because she became a saint by living the same sort of life as they do, in school, playing sports, enjoying her friends, and through it all, living her faith to the full. Teresa's schooling demonstrates a thorough grounding, not only in theology, but also in philosophy, logic, and the humanities. Even more importantly, it was at the same time informed by a fervent and disciplined spiritual life centered on the sacraments and above all on the presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Theologians, reading the writings of this nineteen year old girl, are amazed at the profound, reasoned and clear understanding she had of her faith, a faith that was alive, set on fire by her total love for God. Teresa's life bears witness that a life totally lived for the love of Christ is radiant, joyous and life-expanding.

Mary, The Contemplative
Fr. Joseph Chalmers, O. Carm Prior General
Fr. Chalmers examines the foundations of Carmelite Marian spirituality and focuses on one aspect, that of Mary as she who listened to the Word of God and allowed that Word to shape her entire life. The Sound of Silence: Listening to the Word of God with Elijah the Prophet
Joseph Chalmers, O Carm
In the Bible we read that God's words of love were proclaimed zealously by the prophets of the Old testament, and foremost among God's messengers was Elijah. Elijah, the prophet of Carmel, was a man of prayer and action who experienced God's word in the sound of silence. In his own son, Jeus Christ, God spoke in a new way. Many people who encountered Jesus were struck by how he reminded them of Elijah. In this beautiful set of reflections the prophet Elijah is presented to us in the light of Christian faith by Father Joseph Chalmers, Prior General of Carmelite Order (1995-2007). Drawing on the ancient traditions underlying the practices of Lectio Divina and Centering Prayer, Father Joseph shares with us how to listen contemplatively to God's word in the Bible and in the silence of our hearts.

Mary and the Brown Scapular
Fr Hugh Clarke, O.Carm
According to Carmelite tradition, in the year 1251 the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Simon Stock and gave him a brown scapular to wear as part of the Carmelite habit. A simplified version is used by lay members of the scapular confraternities which is two square pieces of cloth attached with strings, hanging back and front over the shoulders. Today the brown scapular of the Carmelites remains one of the most popular devotions in the Church. In this revised booklet, Fr Hugh shows the biblical foundations for the devotion ahd how the scapular has been understood by the Carmelite saints, as well as making that devotion come alive for us.

Penny Hickey OCDS
The prayers and meditations in this book were compiled to help the reader listen to and pray with the saints of Carmel throughout the ages, from Elijah through the twentieth century. These prayers allow one to enter into the most intimate depths of the souls of Carmelite saints. How better to learn than from the masters themselves. Kavanaugh skillfully selects and arranges passages from Saint Teresa's writings, which tell both the story of her prayer and the content of her contemplation. These selections permit us to ‘taste and see’ God's self-revelation to a woman totally surrendered to God — living theology, in other words.” —Kevin Culligan, O.C.D. The Collected Letters of St Teresa of Avila, Volume 1
trans. Kieran Kavanaugh OCD
St. Teresa of Avila wrote candidly the story of both her life and her work as foundress in two books: the Life and the Foundations. Despite her openness in them, she wrote with the knowledge they would be read by her censors. Her letters, then, exhibit even more striking candor, offering many details that were not meant for the public. In these letters we walk with Teresa year by year, day by day -- even hour by hour sometimes. Her worries, her troubles and triumphs, her expressions of sadness and joy pervade these pages. Without question we have before us a rich collection, showing a heart magnanimously open to others, communicating with them on many levels, pouring itself out to family members and religious, to friends, theologians, advisors, and to the nobility and business people. Contains Letters from 1546 to 1577. Includes Introductions, Endnotes, Biographical Sketches and Index.

Interior Castle - pb
Saint Teresa of Jesus
St. Teresa of Jesus, also known as St. Teresa of Avila, is one of the most popular Doctors of the Church. Her teaching on prayer has continued to inspire and guide Christians in their spiritual journeys for over four hundred years. In The Interior Castle St. Teresa describes the road by which she was led, well aware that the others may be led in a different way. In the heavenly Father’s house, there are many mansions; not only seven, and many paths lead to them. What gives the work such high value is, that it is the result of a most searching inquiry into the various phases whereby a soul is gradually transformed into the likeness of God Himself. Here St. Teresa is at her best. She takes nothing for granted, her own personal experiences are admitted only after having been fully investigated and found to be consistent one with the other, and conformable to the teaching of the Church and the words of Holy Scripture.

Carmelite Studies IX: The Heirs of St Teresa of Avila
ed. Christopher C Wilson, PhD
... Defenders and Disseminators of the Founding Mother's Legacy. This issue of Carmelite Studies presents new insights into the lives and writings of individuals who knew Teresa of Ávila in life and who, after her death in 1582, worked to propagate and defend her legacy, including the illustrious nuns Ana de San Bartolomé, Ana de Jesús, María de San José, and Ana de San Agustín, and her close male confidant and collaborator, Jerónimo Gracián de la Madre de Dios. A further focus of the essays is the reception of the Teresian heritage by individuals outside the order, as mediated by these early Discalced Carmelites and by Teresa's published writings.

The Practice of Contemplation According to John of the Cross
By James R. Kinn
This book is for anyone who now meditates regularly or who practiced meditation in the past. As we grow in our prayer life, John of the Cross is an excellent and encouraging guide to show us the way to the practice of contemplative prayer. Many of us learned about mediation from spiritual directors or books. We practiced a reliable from of mediation for some years with varying degrees of success. Over time, however, our prayer slowed down and became simplified. We didn't find many new ideas to occupy our intellect and our emotions quieted down. In time, many of us experienced a crisis in our prayer life; our prayer became so simple that it almost disappeared. We tried different forms of prayer, but we seemed to be reaching a dead end. Throughout all of this, we were never told that our payer was developing naturally and positively. What we were experiencing was not a dead end but the threshold of a new way of prayer. What we needed was an experienced guide to show us the road ahead. Enter John of the Cross! He encourages us to see that the place we came to is a necessary state of our progress in prayer. John teaches us that we come to contemplation not by struggling harder to pray but by calming remaining quiet before God. He encourages us to realize that we have not come to the end of the road but are being made ready to be transported on a wonderful journey. There is no better or more encouraging guide for us on this journey than John of the Cross. The entire focus of this book is quite narrow; it concentrates on John's teaching about the beginning of contemplation.

John of the Cross - Ascent to Joy
Marc Foley, O.C.D.
In this well-crafted introduction and anthology, Fr. Marc Foley leads the reader step by step into the very heart of the spiritual way taught by John of the Cross. “The core of the teaching is developed in carefully-selected excerpts from John’s own writings. The special gift of Ascent to Joy is that these excerpts are presented in a systematic order, so that the text can function both as a primer of John’s teaching and as a profound introduction to the contemplative way. This volume fills a much-needed niche in the array of spiritual books available today. -Mary Frohlich, Catholic Theological Union, Chicago, IL

The Living Flame of Love
Elizabeth Ruth Obbard
Those who turn to spiritual classics for guidance and inspiration often find their style daunting. The original texts still have much to offer but their diction and idiom, chosen for another era and audience, pose an obstacle to many contemporary readers. “Classics for Everyone” aims to make some of the greatest Christian works accessible to all by retelling them in modern idiom. John of the Cross, an acknowledged master of spirituality, wrote The Living Flame not for his fellow Carmelites but for a layperson, a widow whom he had befriended. He reveals that the way of union is open to everyone, an especially powerful insight for a contemporary audience. The Living Flame, short though it is, contains a complete synthesis of his teaching.

15 Days with St John of the Cross
Constant Tonnelier
This volume contains: A brief biography of Saint John of the Cross; A guide to creating a format for prayer and retreat; and 15 meditation sessions with focus points and reflection guides. Saint John of the Cross (1542–1591), Carmelite friar and Doctor of the Church, was born to a noble but impoverished family in Toledo, Spain. Showing no aptitude for a manual trade, he joined the Carmelite Order in 1563 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1567. Under the influence of Saint Teresa of Ávila, John worked to revive the primitive monastic rule, often against the wishes of religious authorities. Despite periods of imprisonment and banishment, and almost continual harassment, John persisted in his advocacy of monastic reform, and wrote many of his greatest poems and other works under extreme duress. John of the Cross is best known as one of the Church’s great mystical theologians, and the central theme of his mysticism is that through a life of pure faith and love of God, the soul may attain union with the Divine. As your retreat master and companion, John challenges you to become like Christ — to be wounded and suffer with Him, to be consumed by His presence — and thus to be emptied of self, to be purified in heart and mind, and finally to be overcome and transformed by His love. The ultimate consequence of your 15-day journey with John of the Cross may therefore be the deep mystical union with God that John placed at the center of the Christian life.

The Dark Night of the Soul
Saint John of the Cross
St. John takes us on a journey into ourselves, a journey of knowledge and self understanding, that encompasses our failings and imperfections. It shows us how in a place beyond words we can embrace sadness and grief, and seeking God, our lives will be turned around. He describes the “arid and dark night of contemplation” which leads us to “the knowledge of oneself and of one’s misery.” True knowledge of our self and of our condition shows how far we must go to find God, who our restless hearts incessantly seek. The Dark Night of the Soul describes how first the senses, and then the spirit undergo a series of purgation, which aids in bringing it closer to God, and eventually preparing it for union with Him. The individual soul seeks Jesus in a mystical marriage. For after the dark night, comes the joy of mystical union with God.

The Plays of St. Thérèse of Lisieux: "Pious Recreations"
tr. Susan Conroy and David J. Dwyer
Over a period of about three years toward the end of her life, St. Thérèse of Lisieux (1873-1897) was asked by her Carmelite superiors to compose eight "theatrical pieces" for special occasions in her convent. She did not consider them mere trivial amusements. On the contrary, Thérèse invested herself wholeheartedly in the writing and performance of these little dramas, which provided a welcome opportunity to articulate her growing spiritual insights and share them with her religious community. Here we find echoes of her great themes, some where developed at greater length than anywhere else in her writings: Mary of Nazareth and Joan of Arc, humility and the "little way", confidence and love, and so much more. In the present volume, for the first time, all eight of her "plays" are published together in their entirety for English-speaking readers. They open a new window onto the message of the church's youngest "doctor". Also included is a masterful general introduction by the noted Thérèsian expert, Bishop Guy Gaucher, O.C.D., as well as individual introductions to each play explaining it in context and significance.

The Context of Holiness: Psychological and Spiritual Reflections on the Life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Marc Foley, OCD
This book explores both the psychological and spiritual dimensions of the life of St. Thérèse of Lisieux. The basic premise of this book is that the spiritual life is not an encapsulated sphere, cloistered from the realities of our human existence. Rather it is our response to God within the physical, psychological, social and emotional dimensions of life. St. Thérèse did not grow in holiness apart from the human condition. Like all of us, she was emotionally scarred by the fragileness of life. She was deeply wounded by the death of her mother at the age of four, bedridden as the result of a neurotic episode when she was ten, struggled with debilitating scruples most of her life, and suffered an agonizing dark night of faith.

A Guide to the Normandy of St Therese
Christine Frost
Another book on St. Thérèse? Fewer saints in the Church have had so much written about them than “The Greatest Saint of Modern Times” (Pope St. Pius X. Pope Pius XI). Yet, this excellent guide book is an invaluable contribution to Theresian literature, providing a complete guide for all those visiting St. Thérèse’s Normandy, whether for the first time or on a return visit. This book will not only direct them to all the places associated with the saint, but it will also, for those who do not know St. Thérèse, give a clear introduction to her life and thought. Devotees of St. Thérèse will be able to follow in her steps and will recognise some familiar passages from her writings. Reading about an event where it actually took place will add an extra dimension to the experience. Those wanting more detailed information about St. Thérèse’s family and the less well-known places connected with her will find it here. With colour photographs and maps.

The Gift of Therese of Lisieux
John Udris
Perfection lies in being just what he wants us to be.' Thérèse of Lisieux understood our unique identity in God, and spent her life bringing others to know this truth, leading her to describe herself once as "the mother of souls". But Therese is also widely known as "The Little Flower" for her simplicity and her belief in smallness as an attitude before God. Allied to smallness is weakness and Therese found this to be an essential part of the Christian's journey, encouraging us to be joyful in it as it leads us to God on a daily basis. Such gratitude overflows her thinking, making her praise and prayer simple and immediate. This book is written by the noted Thérèse scholar John Udris, Dean of Northampton Cathedral, and superbly illustrated by well-known calligrapher Lynne Muir.

A Therese of Lisieux Prayer Book
Philippe Lefebvre
The relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux are to visit Britain for the first time, from 16 September to 15 October 2009. Before she died in 1897, Thérèse expressed the desire to work as a missionary, spreading the faith to distant parts of the world. Whilst her early death prevented the fulfilment of this ambition, over the last fifteen years her relics have travelled to many countries, inspiring thousands of pilgrims to pray in their presence. This booklet, which brings together some of the most profound prayers and texts by Saint Thérèse, as well as a variety of prayers to her or inspired by her, will help people prepare for this visit. It will lead readers to a better knowledge of her life and little way of spiritual childhood, and guide them on their way to God with one of the greatest and most approachable spiritual teachers ever. Although Thérèse never wrote a book on theology, she was declared a Doctor of the Church. Her teaching consists in her call to universal holiness, prayer, and evangelisation, as well as her deep sense of what it means to have a vocation. Her life serves as a model of charity, and, together with her sisters and parents, as an inspiration for families everywhere.

The Story of a Soul - pb
Saint Therese of Lisieux
The Story of a Soul, better known to the English public as The Autobiography of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, was first published in 1899. Today it ranks amongst the greatest Christian spiritual classics and it has been translated into practically every well-known language. Almost every pope since its publication has proposed St. Thérèse’s teaching to the faithful for their imitation—Pius XI declared her the greatest saint of our age and John Paul II made her a Doctor of the Church. The Story of a Soul possesses in some degree a characteristic common both to the Gospels and The Imitation of Christ. Men and women open the book, often quite casually, and are caught by the vivid clarity or simple profundity of some sentence in such a way that their lives are completely changed. The style of St. Thérèse is extremely simple and spontaneous, having a charm that is hard to describe, especially when she rises to poetic heights. The final chapter, written for her eldest sister Marie, is simply a childlike outpouring of her heart to Jesus Himself. This spiritual classic will speak gently to your heart.

Path of Merciful Love: 99 savings of St Therese
Marc Foley (ed.)
Thérèse of Lisieux, who lived and died in anonymity, is one of the best known and beloved saints of our age. Her spiritual autobiography, Story of a Soul, translated into nearly sixty languages, has nourished countless people with a message that is accessible to everyone. St. Pius X called her “the greatest saint of modern times” and Pope John Paul II declared her a Doctor of the Universal Church. Thérèse taught that sanctity is within everyone’s grasp. However, her happiness was not devoid of pain and conflict. Precisely in this fact does her life mirror our own. She can teach us how to find God in the mundane events of daily life.

The Intimate life of Saint Therese
Fr Albert H Dolan
One of the most comprehensive books written about St. Therese of Lisieux, the beloved Carmelite Sister dedicated to the Child Jesus, whose "Little Way" has served as a means of sanctification for millions of modern day Catholics. Originally printed under the title of Collected Little Flower Works, each section deals with the spiritual journey of the Little Flower, either as the saint saw herself in the eyes of God, or as she was intimately known by her parents, four sibling sisters, fellow religious, childhood friends and others whose lives she touched after her death. First published in 1929, this book is beautifully hardbound in red cloth and embossed on the cover and spine, though you may never notice these features thanks to the elegant dust jacket that comes with the book, complete with one of the Little Flower's most famous portraits. Inside the book there are even more pictures to be found, some of which are not popularly known.

Louis and Zelie Martin: Parents of Therese of Lisieux
Fr Paulinus Redmond
Therese of Lisieux is one of the world's best known saints and a Doctor of the Church. Her four sisters also entered convents. What kind of family life fostered so many vocations and such a great saint? Therese's parents, Louis and Zelie Martin, lived a full life: they were business people, experienced joys and tragedies, including the loss of children, of a wife to cancer and the suffering of mental illness. They made mistakes, but lived a life deeply grounded in prayer, faith and a great love for the Church. Fr Redmond uses letters and many biographical details to describe the soil in which the 'Little Flower' grew.

The Mother of the Little Flower: Zélie Martin (1831-1877)
Celine Martin (Sister Genevieve of the Holy Face)
Was St. Thérèse’s mother herself a saint? Zélie Martin and her husband Louis were declared Venerableby the Church in 1994 for their "Heroic Virtue," and the couple’s cause is now progressing toward Beatification. Zélie married at 27, bore 9 children, ran a home business and did a superb job of raising 5 daughters—including "the greatest saint of modern times." (St. Pius X). She died of breast cancer at 45, but her greatness was recognized by her family and her friends, and is now known to the world. Zélie suffered many of the ordinary burdens of life, yet she was happy, loved her children "madly" and enjoyed them immensely. This book was written by her daughter Celine, who had access to Zelie’s letters and to the reminiscences of her older sisters in the Carmel of Lisieux. It is authentic and inspiring, showing what a tremendous life’s work and accomplishment it is to be a truly Catholic mother.

The Father of the Little Flower: Louis Martin (1823-1894)
Celine Martin (Sister Genevieve of the Holy Face)
Louis Martin was the pattern of Fatherhood on which St. Thérèse built her now famous “Little Way of Spiritual Childhood.” Louis was declared Venerableby the Church in 1994, along with his wife Zélie, because of his "Heroic Virtue." What kind of a father was he? These reminiscences describe Louis Martin’s marriage at age 34, his love and support for Zélie, his firm discipline yet tender affection for his children, his piety, observance of Sunday, business practices, selfless conduct, generosity to the poor, etc. Celine gives particular attention to the sufferings of her father’s old age, foreseen in a vision by Thérèse, which included a period of time spent in a mental institution. She describes his beautiful death, as well as a sign received by Thérèse indicating that their father’s soul had gone straight to Heaven. Letters written by Louis gives additional insights into his character. Louis Martin’s daughters considered themselves highly blessed to have had so good a father.

The Whole World Will Love Me
Dorothy Scallan
This wonderful book links all the elements of her life into one intimate, flowing and absolutely enthralling story - relating details of her beautiful, holy mother; her noble and pious father; her great and generous sisters, all of whom entered the convent; plus her own story - from her infancy to her early entrance into Carmel at 15, to her death at age 24. Toward the end of her life, St. Therese came to an understanding of her own spiritual advancement, for she made several predictions that all came true: That her Story of a Soul should be published as soon as possible, that she would let fall a shower of roses on the whole world when she died, that she would assist anyone who called upon her for aid, and finally, that the whole world will love her. And it does! The Little Flower is probably the best known and loved Saint of all time. Also explains St. Therese's devotion to the Holy Face - and shows how it made her a Saint.

The Fire of Love
Fr James McCaffrey OCD
Praying with St.Therese of Lisieux. From the age of fifteen until her death at twenty-four, Therese of Lisieux lived a hidden life in the seclusion of a Carmelite convent in France. Today, she ranks among the great Doctors of the Church, alongside such figures as Augustine and Thomas Aquinas. This hidden nun, unknown at the time of her death, has become an inspiration for countless men and women all over the world through her writings and spirituality of child-like confidence in God. This warm and intimate portrait of Therese demonstrates that the message of her life is more relevant now than ever before, and introduces us to a practical spirituality for our troubled times. Her life, a celebration of littleness and powerlessness-qualities despised in a world in relentless pursuit of materialism and power-leads us directly to the loving heart of God.

Edith Stein Discovered: A Personal Portrait
Pat Lyne, OCDS
As a child Edith Stein had an intimation that she would be great. Her professor, the world renowned Edmund Husserl, realized that 'in her everything is absolutely true.' It is this passion for truth that marks the whole trajectory of her life and accounts for both her intense dedication to the pursuit of knowledge and the evolution of her spiritual life from a love of science to prayer, to the cloister and finally the witness that brought her to Auschwitz. In her case the monstrous tragedy of the Holocaust had a different kind of solution: 'the wood of the cross has become the light of Christ.' In this lucidly written book, Pat Lyne provides us with an engaging portrait of a saint with whom we feel she has such affinity. It is important to meet the woman who became a philosopher and eventually a saint before grappling with her thought and this book will prove to be the perfect introduction. Includes 26 black and white photos.

Discovering Edith Stein: in a daisy wreath of friends
Pat Lyne, OCDS
A sequel to her popular biography of Edith Stein 'Edith Stein Discovered', this is Pat Lyne's personal memoir, whose central thread is her deepening knowledge and love of the saint which began when Edith was barely known. This warmly written account visits places associated with Edith's life and meets pioneering figures of Edith Stein research. The circumstances and areas of Pat Lyne's own life form the backdrop to the 'discovery', as former guestmistress of Presteigne Carmel, she has many insights about this monastery on the Welsh borders, and she also charts, as background to her membership, the development of another important form of Carmelite life, the Secular Order (formerly 'tertiaries' or Third Order).

Elizabeth of the Trinity: Always Believe in Love
Edited by Sr. Marian Teresa Murphy, O.C.D.
Selected Spiritual Writings. Elizabeth of the Trinity, a relatively unknown Carmelite mystic, acclaimed by John Paul II as a “brilliant witness of love and joy” is “a Carmelite prophet of the presence of God” whose spiritual insights will appeal to a wide audience. This young woman passionately lived the “everyday mysticism” associated with the French School of Spirituality which so influenced the Second Vatican Council’s universal call to holiness. Elizabeth offers a compelling model of holiness to all who long to enter into the mystery of God’s loving gift of self within each one of us as indwelling Trinity. “The reader will meet with an excellent and sure guide to the spiritual life. Blessed Elizabeth of the Trinity is a vivacious and contemporary witness to the love of God. Sister Marian of Jesus has done a tremendous service in helping us to hear and understand the spiritual doctrine of her fellow Carmelite. Blessed Elizabeth is a rising star in the communion of saints. Her diary, letters and poetry are presented here with useful commentary. Those who do not yet know will certainly meet her in these writings and in the admirable account of her life presented by Sister Marian. Elizabeth of the Trinity: Her Message and Spirituality
CTS
Elizabeth Catez, born of a military family, died at the age of 26 as a cloistered Carmelite nun in Dijon, France. Known when a youngster for her beauty, temper tantrums and great skill at the piano, Elizabeth’s spiritual life came to be marked by a deep realization that the Trinity itself wishes to occupy our soul. Close to death she said: ‘In heaven … my mission will be to draw souls to interior recollection, by helping them to renounce self in order to adhere to God in all simplicity and love.’ This small collection, taken from her letters, offers a rare insight into how to love and ‘be occupied’ by Jesus. She was beatified by John Paul II in 1984.

The Prophet of Carmel - The Life and Mission of the Prophet Elias
Rev. Charles B. Garside, M. A.
Garnering his material from the last two of the four Books of Kings, Father Charles Garside, M.A., paints a portrait of a thundering visionary, who lights up the Old Testament perhaps more brilliantly than any other Biblical figure. A man of prayer and solitude, celibate and chaste, he moved courageously with every heavenly summons, never failing, never daunted. So much a contemplative and a teacher of eternal truth that, even though his inital mark on history falls in the Old Dispensation, he is nevertheless justly claimed as "the founder" of the Carmelite order. Taken by God, who came to seize him in a whirlwind, he was assumed into the heavens by way of a fiery chariot, and placed in the Garden of Eden from whence he shall come in the last days to do battle with the Antichrist.

From the Sacred Heart to the Trinity
Fr Gabriel of St Mary Magdalene, OCD
… The Spiritual Itinerary of St. Teresa Margaret (Redi) of the Sacred Heart, O.C.D. Trans Rev Sebastian V Ramge, OCD. St. Teresa Margaret Redi was a Carmelite captivated by the love of God. Helping us to appreciate the holy life she led are eyewitness accounts of her spiritual directors collected soon after her death. The author of this small study builds his story on those accounts by the Discalced Carmelite friars who knew her as a young religious. Father Gabriel of St. Mary Magdalene lays out clearly the steps in Saint Teresa Margaret's spiritual biography and how she developed her deep attachment to love for God, by using classic Carmelite doctrine about growth in the spiritual life.

God is Love: Saint Teresa Margaret: Her Life
Margaret Rowe
St. Teresa Margaret of the Sacred Heart was born into a large devout family in Arezzo, Italy in 1747. From the earliest days of her childhood, Anna Maria was filled with a deep love of God, questioning the adults around her as to "Who is God"? Already she was dissatisfied with answers given her. Only the contemplative life of a Carmelite nun could begin to quench her thirst to know and give herself completely to God. In her were combined Martha and Mary as she served her community as infirmarian while reaching the heights of contemplation.
