Hungry Souls
Gerard J.M. Van Den Aardweg
Supernatural Visits, Messages, and Warnings from Purgatory. After a week of hearing ghostly noises, a man is visited in his home by the spirit of his mother, dead for three decades. She reproaches him for his dissolute life and begs him to have Masses said in her name. Then she lays her hand on his sleeve, leaving an indelible burn mark, and departs... A Lutheran minister, no believer in Purgatory, is the puzzled recipient of repeated visitations from "demons" who come to him seeking prayer, consolation, and refuge in his little German church. But pity for the poor spirits overcomes the man's skepticism, and he marvels at what kind of departed souls could belong to Christ and yet suffer still... Hungry Souls recounts these stories and many others trustworthy, Church-verified accounts of earthly visitations from the dead in Purgatory. Accompanying these accounts are images from the "Museum of Purgatory" in Rome, which contains relics of encounters with the Holy Souls, including numerous evidences of hand prints burned into clothing and books; burn marks that cannot be explained by natural means or duplicated by artificial ones. Riveting!

Humility of Heart
Rev. Cajetan da Bergamo
Newly typeset and repunctuated edition. Our Lord said, "Learn of me, because I am meek, and humble of heart." (Matt 11:29) And also, "Amen, I say to you, unless you be converted and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of Heaven." (Matt 18:3) This classic study in humility describes the nature of that virtue typical of all Saints - the one virtue that underlies every other virtue and without which none of us will enter Heaven. Says, "Impregnate yourself with humility, and you will soon find that all other virtues will follow without any effort on your part." A treasure; filled with insights.

Religious Vocation - An Unnecessary Mystery
Fr Richard Butler OP
The question of discerning a vocation is agonized over by many generous young Catholics today. A solid Thomist, who wrote this book in 1961, Father Butler shows that this type of question shows a totally wrong approach to a religious vocation - an approach that began with misguided theology in the 20th century, which then trickled down to the popular level, confusing both aspirants and spiritual directors. Though Fr. Butler deals primarily with vocations to the religious life, he also gives the classic guidelines on priestly vocations. The author states, based on the tradition of the Church, that religious vocation is not uncommon, rare or extraordinary and that it does not require an introspective search for some special voice or attraction. This book provides welcome, intelligent guidance both for spiritual directors and for those considering the religious life or that of the priesthood!

Why do Catholics Eat Fish on Fridays
Michael P. Foley
The Catholic Origin of Just About Everything. Unearthing the present and forgotten Catholic roots of what we say and do in everyday life. Page after page on the surprising Catholic origin of just about everything in holidays, entertainment, plants and animals, politics, and the English language. Not written specifically for traditional Catholics, but an impressive body of fascinating study proving the indelible yet often unrecognized mark of Catholic belief in the present-day world, even in modern non-Catholic societies, which resonate with the influence of Catholic ways and words: “GOODBYE” is an Old English variation of “God be with ye” ; CHAMPAGNE pioneered by Benedictines; St. Augustine, Father of SNACK FOOD; The game of LA CROSSE is derived from the French missionary word crozier. An interesting thing happens when you read this book. All of a sudden, you become aware that the littlest and most common things and events of the day are echoes of the Catholic Faith and spark your recollection. Indexed.

Interview with an Exorcist
Fr Jose Antonio Fortea
An Insider's Look at the Devil, Demonic Possession, and the Path to Deliverance. In today's culture of scientific enlightenment, many consider belief in demonic possession and exorcism to be superstitious remnants of the Dark Ages. Even many Christians, contrary to the clear words of Jesus in the Gospel, scoff at the notion that the Devil and demons really exist. Is demonic possession real? Are believers really in any danger from Satan and his crafty minions? What is the truth about exorcism? In this captivating book, you will find answers to these questions and many more. Written by one of the Church's foremost experts on the topic, Interview with an Exorcist is based on Fr. Jose Antonio Fortea's years of working as an exorcist, his extensive investigations of cases of suspected possessions, and his attendance at hundreds of exorcisms. You will learn: The difference between demonic possession, obsession, and infestation, What really happens at an exorcism, The signs that show when possession is present, How to tell the difference between psychological problems and demonic influence, Why the number of possessions has been increasing in recent times, Why consulting mediums, dabbling in witchcraft, or having recourse to other occult practices is an open invitation to demonic spirits, Why the permission of the local bishop is required for an exorcism to occur, Why some within the Church disparage this essential apostolic ministry, And much more...

The Passion of Jesus and its Hidden Meaning
Fr James Groenings, S.J.
Undoubtedly the best meditation on the Passion and death of Jesus because it is taken entirely from the Bible--and nothing from private revelations. It is absolutely amazing how much we know about our Saviour's suffering and death from the Bible alone! It also interprets the lessons we should derive from each episode of the Passion. Gives a host of comparable lessons most people never even dreamed were there. . .and the hidden meanings of each event of the Passion.

The Gift of Self to God
Father John Nicholas Grou, S.J
Translated by the Benedictines of Teignmouth. This timely monograph, composed by Jesuit Father Nicholas Grou, contains precious gems of holy wisdom. They are the fruit of a pastor of souls well acquainted with the latter-day stratagems of an experienced adversary determined to get the focus of persecuted and battle-weary Catholics off the straight and narrow course leading to Boromirpersonal sanctity. The Gift of Self to God, which is the heart of the composition, is an extremely provoking and healing meditation dealing with the necessity and salutary advantage of giving our all to God. It is a perfect compliment to the spirit of Saint Louis Marie de Montfort’s True Devotion to Mary. Not as well known as he should be, the work of this great doctor of the interior life is reprinted here, together with two of his other essays, all of which confirm the virtue of filial trust in God.

The Seven Sacraments
Anselm Grun
The best selling Benedictine Fr Anselm Grün applies his extensive counselling experience, great fund of common sense, biblical insight and analytical training to the seven sacraments recognized by the Catholic Church: Baptism, Eucharist (or Communion), Confirmation, Reconciliation (Penance, or Confession), Marriage, Ordination and the Anointing of the Sick. Each sacrament's meaning is examined, as well as its history, its form - past and present - and its impact on the life of those who receive it and those who administer it. Grün also suggests how the sacraments could be made more relevant to Christians living in the twenty-first century. Adults about to receive any one of the sacraments will gain insight and inspiration; teachers, parish priests, and pastoral workers will find their work enriched and made easier; married and celibate will discover elements to celebrate in their own and the other's way of life. As always, Grün combines flashes of radicalism with deep understanding of Catholic tradition. His is a unique voice and here he reclaims a vital subject from widespread ignorance and neglect.

Reasons to Believe
Scott Hahn
Is belief in God a delusion? Is faith blind, or is there a reasonable case for Christianity? Bestselling author Scott Hahn explains the "how and why" of the Catholic faith, drawing from Scripture, his own struggles and those of other converts, as well as from everyday life and natural science. Hahn shows that reason and revelation, nature and the supernatural, are not opposed to one another; rather they offer complementary evidence that God exists. Reasons to Believe unravels mysteries, corrects misunderstandings, and offers thoughtful, straightforward responses to common objections about the Catholic faith. It is the ideal book both for Christians who want to grow stronger in their faith and to share it with others, and for enquirers in search of a belief that satisfies both the mind and the heart.

First Comes Love
Scott Hahn
Scott Hahn, in First Comes Love, uses the idea of family to explain Catholic thought about the Trinity. Hahn believes that the relations among the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are a model for the relations among every nuclear unit composed of father, mother, and child. And he believes that the family of the Church helps people emulate the Trinitarian family and can heal them when they fall short of such holiness. Hahn moves easily from personal anecdote to Scriptural analysis, making his case that Jesus understood all of humanity as part of one family when he called his followers brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers. First Comes Love makes the salutary point that neither romance nor parenthood alone can give us a sufficient sense of belonging. "God built us all to live in a much larger family, to experience a much larger love ... a love that extends infinitely." 'This is a remarkable book' Aidan Nichols OP.

John Henry Newman: Parochial and Plain Sermons
John Henry Newman
All eight volumes of Newman's famous sermons are brought together in this new edition that is beautifully printed and bound on Bible paper with a flexible leatherette cover and red ribbon. Newman's sermons are as powerful, fresh and challenging today as when he first gave them. The topics that Newman covers are ones central to Christianity and salvation. Newman once again demonstrates his profound understanding of human psychology, and the temptations and trials we encounter as Christians in the world. This deluxe edition is a magnificent work of timeless inspiration and illumination for every generation of Christian readers. 191 sermons in total. "These sermons are given here, for the first time in a single volume, as the most lasting expression of Newman's own gradual discovery of all the fullness of the appeal and the challenge addressed to all men by Catholic truth and Catholic life, inseparable as they are within genuine Christianity. There, above all, he himself will be found, with his intellectual power, his poetical vision, as well as his moral and spiritual integrity. Nothing can constitute for us, still today, and maybe today more than ever, such a powerful introduction to what Christianity may give to and expect from our surrender to its call in the midst of a world no longer pretending to be Christian."

Why Must I Suffer?
Rev. F J Remler C.M.
Fr. Remler gives 15 classic Catholic reasons why God allows suffering. He deals with Original Sin, our own personal sins, and the real danger of eternal perdition, but he also clearly lays out the Catholic "secrets" that God has given us for turning evil to good. He covers many reasons for suffering: reparation, healing, prevention, gaining salvation for one's self and others, etc. This book puts us back in touch with the perspective of eternity, providing both a reality check about sin and a renewal of Catholic hope in the mercy and grace of God.

The Theory of Evolution Judged by Reason and Faith
Cardinal Ernesto Ruffini
A scholarly study, Cardinal Ruffini (1888-1967) expounds what the Catholic Church teaches on the subject, and then ably demonstrates how modern science contradicts the theories of evolutionists. Cardinal Ruffini's recognized classic, La Teoria della Evoluzione secondo la Scienza e la Fede, is famous among students of science, philosophy, history, theology and Scripture not only for the depth and breath of its wisdom and for the unusual thoroughness of its treatment, but probably more so for the unusual clarity and simplicity of its writing. In The Theory of Evolution Judged by Reason and Faith, Cardinal Ruffini addresses himself to the subjects of Darwinian evolution and, with greater emphasis, to its mitigated form of transformism - the evolution of the human body, not of the human soul. Against both positions His Eminence arrays the findings of science (paleontology, embryology, anatomy, physiology, parasitism, genetics, etc.), the teachings of the Scholastics and the Fathers of the Church, and (most significantly, since he is a Cardinal member of the Pontifical Biblical Commission) the authority of Scripture scholars. This work, more convincingly and more thoroughly than any other, makes sharply clear the mind of the Roman Catholic Church on the two subjects under analysis. This is a must-have book for any Catholic who wants to understand the Church's authentic voice on this crucial contemporary topic.

The Gift of Oneself
Fr. Joseph Schryvers C.SS.R.
The Gift of Oneself will be for many a fresh, new approach to spirituality - an appeal to generous souls to offer themselves to God as a gift that is at once fitting - since He has given us all we are and have - and complete, for we thereby hold back nothing for ourselves. And in return, Almighty God in a special way concerns Himself with the sanctification of our souls and the care of our temporal needs. Jesus will work wonders in a soul so given over to Him, for He is the best of all spiritual directors, and He knows exactly the place in the Mystical Body that a consecrated soul should occupy. This gift of oneself to God is easy, for all we have to do is love Him. In return for the gift of oneself, God responds by giving Himself. What more could we want or need?

Hell: the Dogma of Hell
Fr F X Shouppe, SJ
The Dogma of Hell explores the basic Catholic doctrine on Hell, purposefully awakening in the reader a profound realization of its reality and eternity of horrors. Eminent French theologian Fr F X Schouppe, SJ, author of Purgatory Explained by the Lives and Legends of the Saints, has written here a similar but much smaller book. In short chapters, he has recounted numerous true stories, apparitions of the damned, and complete Catholic teaching on Hell. He clearly shows that for those who are not motivated to do good out of love of God, the fear of Hell is a legitimate and often salutary motive for avoiding sin. Although the subject matter is frightening, the ultimate purpose of this book is not to frighten souls, but to help them avoid damnation by reminding them of the pain and suffering in an eternity spent in the absence of God.

The Mystery of Love for the Single
Fr Dominic J Unger OFM Cap
Few realize that a person can pursue a truly supernatural vocation by consecrating himself or herself to perpetual celibacy while yet living in the world. Here Fr. Unger describes the main guidelines for such a religious vocation, showing the nature of this vocation and the manner of dedicating oneself to it. The author gives the history in the Church of consecrated celibate living, plus some basic helps in safeguarding purity in such a life. Based on the Pope Pius XII encyclical On Holy Virginity, this book shows that the consecrated life in the world is just one more example of the rich Tradition of the Church in providing for the needs of all her children. The Mystery of Love for the Single will bring much-needed encouragement and enlightenment to those generous souls who wish to pursue a supernatural vocation and yet remain single and celibate while living in the world.

Cube and the Cathedral
George Weigel
Europe, America, and Politics without God. Contrasting the civilization that produced the starkly modernist 'cube' of the Great Arch of La Defense in Paris with the civilization that produced the 'cathedral' of Notre Dame, Weigel argues that Europe's embrace of a narrow and cramped secularism has led to a crisis of civilizational morale that is eroding Europe's soul and failing to create the European future. Can there be any true 'politics' - any true deliberation about the common good and any robust defence of freedom - without God? George Weigel makes a powerful case that the answer is 'No'.

The Unexpected Way. On Converting from Buddhism to Catholicism
Paul Williams
There are those who decide to abandon Christianity for another faith. Scholar and broadcaster Professor Paul Williams chose another way. After 20 years spent teaching and practising Tibetan Buddhism, he astonished his family and friends by converting to Roman Catholicism. 'The Unexpected Way is more than just the story of one man's conversion to Catholicism; it could be a turning point in the dialogue between Buddhism and Christianity, for it challenges Christians and Buddhists alike to test the consistency of their intellectual and moral convictions as gold is tested in a furnace.' Come Rack! Come Rope!
Robert Hugh Benson
Some years before this book was written, H. Belloc wrote that R. Benson would be “the man to write some day a book to give us some sort of idea what happened in England between 1520 and 1560.” Come Rack! Come Rope! is the most vivid and gripping novel ever written about how the Reformation happened. In this book, the appalling events come to life. This novel tells of the struggles and sufferings of Catholic Recusants under Queen Elizabeth I of England. One such Recusant, Robin Audrey, is shocked to learn his father has decided to leave the Catholic Church for the safety of the Church of England. The narrative follows Robin’s struggle with the call of faith, as he is torn between his dream of marriage and a priestly vocation, which would entail further persecution and might even end in martyrdom.

Heretics
G K Chesterton
One of Chesterton’s earliest books, Heretics, is also one of his best. Overflowing with characteristic wit, incisiveness, and splendid gusto, here is Chesterton’s razor-sharp analysis of the fallacies of modern thought as exemplified in the leading writers of the time. Nietzsche, Shaw, Yeats, Kipling, Ibsen, H.G. Wells and others, are all submitted to a ruthless Chestertonian examination. However, true to his character, Chesterton gives the antagonist his due, while allowing the reader to celebrate the real value of his work.

Reginal Cardinal Pole: The Last Archbishop of Canterbury
Michael Hutchings
There is no better way of examining the truth of what happened at the Reformation than by looking at the life and times of Cardinal Pole. Michael Hutchings achieves the rare success of a book that is thoroughly scholarly and accurate but at the same time reads like a thriller, all in 116 pages. This new book on Pole also makes a disturbing comparison with the public stance of many of our contemporary bishops. The life of Cardinal Reginal Pole - 1500-1558 - is most edifying. Had he been put to it, he would certainly have rejoiced in martyrdom and he would be in our list of saints. Hutchins quotes others on Cardinal Pole and he is able to quote an enthusiastic writer about Pole, none other than a certain Cardinal Ratzinger who has since changed his job. Hutchings quotes the then Cardinal Ratzinger in Church, Ecumenism and Politics on Pole’s stand for unity and papal primacy; “in the actual case of England, the denial of the Papacy means transferring to the State the Church’s external order, the system of a State Church and, along with this secular domination over the Church, the disappearance of martyrdom. In turn this means that for Pole the martyrs are the unequivocal indication of where the Church is to be found – and here we touch on the real reason, both psychological and theological, which turned Pole into a defender of the Papacy.” Aren’t we fortunate to have a Pope with such an understanding of English history? And do not these words have relevance to the current condition of the Catholic Church in England? Beautifully presented hardbound, with watercolour illustrations by Madeleine Beard, themselves based on ancient documents. The cover has a fine colour reproduction of a notable work of art: the portrait of Cardinal Pole by Sebastiano del Piombo. The book is on high quality paper and is well printed. It is a required purchase for any Catholic school library.

The Gunpowder Plot
Hugh Ross Williamson
This book explains what happened almost 400 years ago in England when barrels of gunpowder were found under the House of Lords. A plot was undoubtedly discovered, but what kind of plot? Was it a conspiracy of Catholics against the Government or the Government against the Catholics? This is a fascinating story of intrigue and suspense—involving heroic actions, cowardly politics and unwavering faith. But even more fascinating is the fact that it is a true story. Hugh Ross Williamson writes a clear and exact account of one of the most controversial episodes of the English Reformation, but in a style interesting even to the casual reader. The book includes excellent end notes, illustrations, complete index, bibliography. Gold embossed imitation leather cover, cream paper, quality sewn signatures.

The Essential Belloc - A Prophet for Our Times
Scott Bloch, et al
Hilaire Belloc was a poet, polemicist, and prose stylist without peer, but above all, an entire generation's mighty champion for the Catholic faith. The Essential Belloc, a timely new compilation of his insights on religion, politics, Western history and culture, is perfect for Catholics struggling against secularism. Included are his lighter musings on the particular charms of towns and peoples throughout the world, the love of good food and drink, and the songs of camaraderie that go with them. This is the perfect book for those who know and love Belloc and for those not yet familiar with the brilliance and humor found in his prose. "His range of brilliance as a writer have been matched by very few moderns. The Essential Belloc is an invaluable resource and hugely enjoyable reading. " - Charles J Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Denver "Belloc believed that party and state are not all powerful, that the Church and Family have a primary place... We need him now more than ever." - Senator Rick Santorum, author of It Takes A Family "History, politics, sailing, religion, taverns, economics - his pen, like his sardonic wit and melancholy wisdom, never fails." - David Whalen, Associate Provost, Hillsdale College "An affectionate and appreciative study of Hilaire Belloc, that splendid writer, modern prophet, and morally courageous defender of the Faith." - Patrick J Buchanan. The Very Best Quotes, Quips, and Cracks from the Pen of G.K. Chesterton. Beloved Catholic author Gilbert Keith Chesterton was a poet, a journalist, a mystery novelist, a people's theologian and, some would say, a prophet who only by looking at the world upside-down could see it clearly enough to predict its future. He was also a wordsmith of the highest order, capable of making words dance with delight upon the page. The Wisdom of Mr. Chesterton is a unique collection of the pithiest and most profound sentences ever to spring from his pen. Editor and renowned apologist Dave Armstrong has scoured Chesterton's voluminous writings even the most obscure gathered together his choicest quotes, and meticulously organized them by topic. Sure to delight readers with its wit and charm.

Hilaire Belloc
Karl Schmude
The astounding life of the famous English writer, historian and controversialist. History has been less kind to Belloc than to his great friend and collaborator Chesterton. Yet for several decades at the turn of the twentieth century, he was considered one of the great literary figures of the age. President of the Oxford Union as a student and later on a Member of Parliament, it was Belloc’s vigorous desire to defend Christendom against the attacks of socialism, capitalism and secularism that inspired much of his writing.

Orthodoxy
G K Chesterton
The most brilliant book of apologetics in the English language. Chesterton wrote Orthodoxy in 1908 in response to a challenge from one of his readers to state his creed. Rarely has any challenge been more gloriously and chivalrously met. This is early Chesterton at his best: sparkling paradoxes, breathtaking wordplay, trenchant argument and blinding logic. The reader is treated to a witty and insightful work, that illustrates how reasonable orthodoxy really is, despite the attacks of its critics. The book also provides a spiritual autobiography, as Chesterton employs his own discovery of orthodox Christianity in order to defend its beauty and its sanity against modern secular schools of philosophy. The book manages to intellectually challenge the reader, while still appealing to a child-like sense of awe at the world around us.

The Idea of a University
Cardinal John Henry Newman
No man was ever better qualified to write such a book as The Life of a University than Cardinal Newman was. And the subject has never been more pressing than it is today. In this classic, Newman poses a number of important questions: What is the purpose of education? What does it mean to be educated? What is the role of a university? What is the relationship between learning and the life of a society? And where does Catholicism fit in? The issues Newman examined with incomparable insight continue to be relevant today, one hundred and fifty years after it was first published. This book has been recognized as probably the greatest of its kind, and no one interested in the relationship between religion, learning, culture and politics can afford to neglect it.

Walled about with God
Dom Jean Prou, OSB and the Benedictine Nuns of the Solesmes Congregation
Trans. / ed. By Br David Hayes, OSB. This unique book, written by cloistered nuns themselves, answers many questions about the nature, justification, and history of the cloistered life, particularly for woment. For example it shows that far from being an invention of the Middle Ages which was imposed on women by a male-dominated Church and society, enclosure was in fact freely chosen by nuns themselves from the very beginning and only later became an object of canonical legislation. Drawing on the riches of Christian tradition, this book examines enclosure from a biblical, historical, spiritual and theological perspective, showing how it aids the prayer-life and mission of cloistered nuns. This book will be of interest to all who are seeking to deepen their understanding of the contemplative life and prayer.

Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England and Some Remarks Relative to Ecclesiastical Architecture and Decoration
Augustus Welby Pugin
Pugin (1812-1852) exercised a seminal influence on British archtecture in the nineteenth century, perhaps even more through his writings than his buildings. These facsimile articles, contain important autobiographical notes and commentary on his own architecture, not found elsewhere in his major texts. In the Present State.. (first issued as two articles in 1841-2) he gives us some minutely detailed accounts with ilustrations of his churches up to the year 1842. But his most revealing autobiographical writing is to be found in Some Remarks, published in 1850, and reprinted here for the first time. It takes the story almost to the end of his life, includes an account of his conversion to Catholicism (1835) and describes many of the churches he built between 1838 and 1850, giving a fascinating account of his campaign to revive the glories of the pre-Reformation English Catholic Church in the nineteenth century. Introduction by noted Pugin authority, Dr Roderick O'Donnell.

The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture and An Apology for The Revival of Christian Architecture
Augustus Welby Pugin
Pugin (1812-1852) came to exercise a seminal influence articulated through the Gothic Reivival pinrciples on British archtecture in the nineteenth century. He was to observe at the end of his short life, and even shorter career (no more than sixteen years) as an architect, that his writings had 'revolusionised the Taste of England'. Trained in his father's drawing office, his brilliant draughtmanship developed, as did his mission to demonstrate a new, causal, connection between art and life. Pugin's books and pamphlets established him as an architectural and Catholic controversialist. True Principles presents the Gothic Revival as 'not a style, but a principle', and introduces functionalist, rationalist and moral criteria into architectural discourse. This is presented in facsimile here together with An Apology, his thoughts on architectural education. Previously long out of print, these important source books are introduced by architectural historian and Pugin authority, Dr Roderick O'Donnell.

Explanation of the Holy Mass
Dom Prosper Gueranger
Dom Gueranger explains every part of the Mass (from beginning to end) in a clear, yet profound, way. You get a good dose of liturgical history and spirituality as he explains how each part fits together – and why. Gueranger wrote this book after his magnum opus the Liturgical Year and it is meant to complement it. In three main parts: * Explanation of the Holy Mass (where the main parts of the Mass are explained); * The Canon (where each prayer of the Canon is explained); * The Ordinary of the Mass (where the prayers of the Ordinary, but not of the Canon, are systematically explained). For example: The Gradual: "Between the Epistle and the Gospel, we have the Gradual. It consists of a Responsory and its Versicle. Formerly, the whole Responsory was repeated both before and after the Versicle, in the way now used with the brief responsories, only the Responsory was exceedingly rich in notes. The Gradual is really the most musical piece in the whole liturgy; and, as the rendering of it requires great skill, there were never more than two chanters permitted to sing it. When about to sing it, they went to the ambo, which was a sort of marble pulpit, placed in the church; and it was on account of the steps which led to the ambo, that this portion of the chant got the name of Gradual; just as the Gradual Psalms were those which the Jews used to sing whilst ascending the steps of the Temple." St Paul the Apostle
Pope Benedict XVI
Sensitive to the needs of today's Christians, Pope Benedict XVI uses the teachings of St. Paul as a foundation for encouraging hope and spiritual wisdom within the modern Church. Blinded, then enlightened; Instructed, then sent out to instruct; Imprisoned ... beaten ... shipwrecked ... and ultimately martyred for his faith in Christ the Lord. Few human beings hve experienced such a profound walk with the Lord as St. Paul has. It was his devotion to Christ and willingness to endure any amount of suffering for the sake of His Church that inspired Pope Benedict to declare the Year of Saint Paul. In a series of homilies, Pope Benedict delves into the rich inheritance left to the Church by St. Paul, exploring the timeless story of his history, dramatic conversion, and ministry. As he pastored fledgling churches with words of enouragement, occasional admonishment, and exquisitely profound teaching, St. Paul continues to be a prevailing source of theological wisdom today.

Caritas in Veritate
Pope Benedict XVI
Encyclical Letter on Integral Human Development in Charity and Truth. Pope Benedict's long-awaited social encyclical addressing contemporary challenges facing the world: "Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. In the present social and cultural context, where there is a widespread tendency to relativize truth, practising charity in truth helps people to understand that adhering to the values of Christianity is not merely useful but essential for building a good society and for true integral human development." Caritas in Veritate is the fruit of the Church's reflection on the challenges facing the world today. Pope Benedict seeks to set the moral framework in which such challenges can be addressed, by saying that the charitable desire to work for the good of the world must always be balanced with the need to act in the light of the full truth about humanity. The encyclical addresses the following contemporary themes: * globalisation; * the economic crisis; * the limits of free-market economics; * the environment; * poverty and development; * social inequalities; * the role of technology; * human migration; * consumerism; * population control; * religious freedom; * religious and secularist fundamentalism; * human rights - and their limits.

Spe Salvi: Encyclical letter on Christian Hope
Pope Benedict XVI
A profound consideration of the virtue of hope. The present day crisis of faith, Pope Benedict argues, is a crisis of Christian hope. In his second encyclical, the Holy Father presents a masterly survey of the abandonment of Christian hope in favour of faith in progress and technology which ultimately led to atheism and Communism and yet more suffering for humanity, whereas man's true hope is not in ideologies but in God who has loved us to the end. The document, which in fact does not refer to previous Papal documents but rather draws in particular on St Augustine and the Fathers of the Church and on several modern Saints and martyrs, ends with an encouragement to foster hope through prayer and to rediscover the practice of offering up our sufferings in order to imbue them with significance. Finally Pope Benedict invites all to see the hope that there is in the judgement of God, in praying for the dead and in the purification of purgatory.

Sacramentum Caritatis
Pope Benedict XVI
In this extended reflection on the Eucharist, Pope Benedict underlines the inseparable link between our eucharistic faith and Christian mission. Drawing together the conclusions of his fellow bishops, he calls for a deeper consideration of the inherent mystery, unity, power and vital importance of the identifiable components of the Eucharist. A liturgy, he concludes, that is full of beauty and unity, where the faithful can actively participate with their whole lives, will lead to a renewed missionary zeal, carrying the fruits of communion and belonging that we receive to the whole of our increasingly secular society.

Deus Caritas Est
Pope Benedict XVI
Deus Caritas Est – God is Love. First Encyclical Letter. "Love is possible, and we are able to practise it because we are created in the image of God. To experience love and in this way to cause the light of God to enter into the world - this is the invitation I would like to extend with the present Encyclical." Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical deals with the most fundamental calling of every Christian: that of love. The first part reclaims the often misused word "love" and looks specifically at the "epitome of love", that between a man and a woman. Benedict responds to the claims that Christianity destroyed erotic love by arguing that only when body and soul are united can eros be healed and be restored to its true grandeur. The second part of the encyclical looks at how the love of God and of Christ on the cross urges us on to love our fellow human beings. Individual Christians and the Church as a body must exercise charity and service to all those in need, not motivated by any self-interest nor to take upon herself a political struggle, but simply to make the living God visible. "The anti-culture of death... is thus countered by an unselfish love which shows itself to be a culture of life by the very willingness to ‘lose itself’ for others."

Jesus of Nazareth
Pope Benedict XVI
In his first book written as Pope, Benedict XVI shares a personal approach to the figure at the very centre of Christian faith. Accessible and illuminating, Jesus of Nazareth is an antidote to the academic search for the ‘historical’ Jesus. This work by a reigning Pope who is also an accomplished theologian is full of insight, humility and honesty. The Pope has called Jesus of Nazareth, ‘solely an expression of my personal search "for the face of the Lord". Everyone is free, then, to contradict me. I would only ask my readers for that initial willingness to sympathise, without which there can be no understanding.’ The Pope’s fundamental purpose in this book is to restore and renew ‘the interior friendship with Jesus … a figure that makes sense and feels right in historical terms.’ An informative and insightful portrait of the figure that emerges in the Gospels, it is also a deeply spiritual work that contends with the dramatic and provocative questions of faith. Important and valuable to those disillusioned by troubled times and as a remedy to modern historical scepticism, Jesus of Nazareth will engage and provoke thought in anyone who seeks a relationship with God.

The Catholic Home
Father Alexander, OFM
In this long out-of-print book, Father Alexander, OFM, addresses critical issues concerning home-life such as courtship, marriage, and parenthood. Written during the first World War, home-and family-life were under aggressive attack, while men were away fighting. Since that time the assault has increased and widened. The Catholic Home delivers guidelines and insights in a manner concise enough for the reluctant but erudite enough for the conscientious. Father helps the reader restore home life and all its parts to the central place of honor it deserves. Father Alexander (1854-1941) was a Fransiscan brother and priest. In addition to this work, he authored A Spiritual Retreat, Honour Thy Mother, The Way of Youth, The Third Province, A Mother's Letters, and The Method of Giving Missions and Retreats in General Use Among the Fransiscan Fathers of the English Province. "I hope [this book] will be very widely read by parents-especially by young parents - and by young married couples and youths and maidens who are preparing for the holy state of Matrimony." - Louis Charles Casartelli, Bishop of Salford

Motherhood and Family
Integrity Magazine
Motherhood and Family answers the questions, “What does a woman want?" Answer – What a woman is natured to do. “What is a woman natured to do?"—Motherhood and family. If mankind is a tree, woman is its roots. And the roots are hurting (even Catholic roots). This is a book for traditional Catholic parenting. Book reviewer for The Remnant, Mrs. Sherry Foster, writes: “I really found the book to be very helpful for me personally and I’m so excited for the women who will read it.” If any of these hit home, ladies, Motherhood and Family is talking about it with you: * Avoid the discouragement of reforming your husband according to your ideas of (feminine) holiness; * Multiply the spiritual goods coming from homebirth and breastfeeding; * Debunk worldly notions of love and romance for your growing girls; * Use the watchwords of common sense and courage to help your family; * Invite poverty to be a necessary part of your Family Rule; * Serve the Church, family, and parish as a single woman; * Understand the similarities between marriage and consecrated religious life which advance holiness; * Prepare for the end of active motherhood and the beginning of a gracious old age.

Healing the Wounds of History
Peter Hocken
Repentance is key for reconciliation and healing between individuals. What does one do, however, when it is a question of institutional sin, deep seated prejudices, racism, or wrong doing that may have been done by a nation, group or even by individuals representing the Church many years ago? Pope John Paul II has played a particularly significant rote in Christian initiatives for reconciliation. To help us reflect on this area, in this paper, Fr Peter Hocken looks at the whole area of Repentance for the sins of the past and the significance of the Purification of Memories. He also gives some practical advice on how people might get involved in this.

The Christian Teacher: Shepherd of Loving Kindness
David O'Malley, SDB
Every teacher, working vocationally, is looking for buried treasure. The teacher will unearth the strands of God’s spirit that point to a loving presence at the heart of each person, hidden in relationships, and in the gifts among colleagues and pupils. In tantrums and in tragedies, in celebrations and shared silence, the same spirit of loving kindness will emerge, slipping into and out of focus in our poor spiritual sight. Now we see only dimly what will later become obvious; we need to work with the faith that God is with us. In the vocation to teach, we need a deeper insight to see that it is well worth going the extra mile. This booklet is an attempt to sharpen the awareness of the teacher in recognising opportunities for loving kindness.. It will help teachers support colleagues. Working with the young, there are moments for gratitude and celebration scattered throughout each day. This book is meant to be used to help evaluate that wider unspoken set of expectations that persist after the more measurable elements of teaching have been recorded and analysed.

Christian Leadership
David O'Malley, SDB
This book considers, in a very practical way, the dilemma of leaders in Christian communities; involved with the delivery of plans, targets and budgets: yet sensitive to the hidden presence of God in all that happens. The aim is help leaders strengthen their awareness of the spiritual dimension of leadership in school and youth groups by looking at the way gospel patterns can emerge through the service of authority in a Christian community. The vocational dimension of carrying responsibility is the main focus of this book: that spiritual thread is traced in the vagaries of planning and building teams, while recognising the spiritual patterns unfolding in ordinary events. Touching that deeper stream of consciousness in leadership gives energy and increased stamina to those who bear the hidden burden of leadership. This book should prove invaluable for all who lead, or aspire to lead, in a Christian community.

On the Invocation of the Name of Jesus
Lev Gillet, A Monk of the Eastern Church
The invocation of the Name of Jesus is a way of prayer more familiar to Christians of the East than of the West. In the Orthodox Church it is known as the “Jesus Prayer” and is widely practiced, not only in monasteries but by lay people as well. The invocation of the Holy Name, however, has also been used by many generations of Western Christians. This form of prayer has a universal appeal to Orthodox and Roman Catholics, to Anglicans and Protestants, to all kinds of Christians of both Eastern and Western traditions.

Christ is in Our Midst
Fr John (Anonymous)
To this saintly Russian monk who died in 1958, “the one thing needful” is God, and the path to God is prayer, “prayer unceasing.” Through prayer man can once again get in touch with his heart, the core of his being, wherein the dwelling place of God is truly to be found. These letters, so steeped in wisdom and humility, ring with a rare depth and simplicity. These letters of a true contemplative and spiritual guide, who is able to rejoice in God's love in the midst of an increasingly materialistic world, who is able to trust fully in Him, and to discern in all the circumstances of life, no matter how humble or seemingly commonplace, a meaning and a dimension of eternity.

Mary Mother of God: Her Life in Icons and Scripture
ed. Giovanna Parravicini
Icons, 'sacred pages' which convey the message of salvation to us, are receiving renewed interest in Western culture, in contrast to the Eastern churches in which they have always held a privileged place. In this book, rare and precious oriental icons have been assembled to tell the life of the Virigin Mary, the Theotokos (Mother of God). Each four-colour icon is accompanied by a guide to its significance, together with texts from the Bible and from the Fathers of the Eastern Church - sequenced according to the story of our salvation, from the Old to the New Testament. This book is truly a contemplative encounter with the 'most precious treasure of the earth' by which we are led by this 'woman clothed with the syn' to pentrate more deeply into the mystery of her Son.

The Bible and the Qur'an
Jacques Jomier O.P.
What do Christians need to know about the Qur'an (Koran)? Fr Jacques answers the question admirably. He contrasts the essential teachings of Islam with the Jewish and Christian understandings of themselves. He examines Islamic teachings on Jesus and Mary, the universal mission of Muslims and Islamic Law. He is both sympathetic and critical. Never has there been a more critical time than this for Christians to learn about Islam and its Holy book, the Qur'an.

Celtic Christianity: A Sacred Tradition, A Vision of Hope
Timothy Joyce
This book introduces a mysterious and extraordinary spiritual world, one which drew on pre-Christian beliefs and culture and took form in the church as it developed among the Celtic peoples sixteen centuries ago. Celtic Christianity offers a rediscovery of an ancient tradition that can sustain spiritual seekers and renew the church today. As Timothy Joyce shows, Celtic spirituality appeals to mind, body, and spirit. Joyous and mystical, it affirms the goodness of creation and the gifts of women; it blossoms in poetry, myth, and song. While recounting the heroic tales of saints Patrick, Bridget, and Columcille, Joyce also goes beyond other books, showing how and why this distinctive tradition gradually was subsumed by a more rigid and authoritarian style of Catholocism. Finally, he movingly reflects on the centuries of suffering that have left an indelible mark on Irish consciousness and spirit.

Advent and Christmas Wisdom from St Francis of Assisi
John V Kruse
It is essential in today's postmodern culture to remember the true purpose of Advent--the preparation for and celebration of the coming of Jesus. Each day's selection offers a new insight from one of the most beloved saints, St. Francis of Assisi. St. Francis serves as an appropriate model of virtue during the time of year when it is easy to become caught up in the materialized aspects of the holiday. Through his words, we are reminded of the simplicity in poverty, the reverence of God's word, of showing gratitude, and practicing forgiveness. Along with the words of St. Francis are daily Scripture readings and prayers that mirror his philosophy. After reflecting, readers will find an Advent action--something simple they can do to keep the words and prayers alive with them throughout the day.
