Books - General: Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England and Some Remarks Relative to Ecclesiastical Architecture and Decoration

Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England and Some Remarks Relative to Ecclesiastical Architecture and Decoration

Present State of Ecclesiastical Architecture in England and Some Remarks Relative to Ecclesiastical Architecture and Decoration      Augustus Welby Pugin

Pugin (1812-1852) exercised a seminal influence on British archtecture in the nineteenth century, perhaps even more through his writings than his buildings. These facsimile articles, contain important autobiographical notes and commentary on his own architecture, not found elsewhere in his major texts. In the Present State.. (first issued as two articles in 1841-2) he gives us some minutely detailed accounts with ilustrations of his churches up to the year 1842. But his most revealing autobiographical writing is to be found in Some Remarks, published in 1850, and reprinted here for the first time. It takes the story almost to the end of his life, includes an account of his conversion to Catholicism (1835) and describes many of the churches he built between 1838 and 1850, giving a fascinating account of his campaign to revive the glories of the pre-Reformation English Catholic Church in the nineteenth century. Introduction by noted Pugin authority, Dr Roderick O'Donnell. [more details...]

The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture and An Apology for The Revival of Christian Architecture

The True Principles of Pointed or Christian Architecture and An Apology for The Revival of Christian Architecture      Augustus Welby Pugin

Pugin (1812-1852) came to exercise a seminal influence articulated through the Gothic Reivival pinrciples on British archtecture in the nineteenth century. He was to observe at the end of his short life, and even shorter career (no more than sixteen years) as an architect, that his writings had 'revolusionised the Taste of England'. Trained in his father's drawing office, his brilliant draughtmanship developed, as did his mission to demonstrate a new, causal, connection between art and life. Pugin's books and pamphlets established him as an architectural and Catholic controversialist. True Principles presents the Gothic Revival as 'not a style, but a principle', and introduces functionalist, rationalist and moral criteria into architectural discourse. This is presented in facsimile here together with An Apology, his thoughts on architectural education. Previously long out of print, these important source books are introduced by architectural historian and Pugin authority, Dr Roderick O'Donnell. [more details...]

The Catholic Priest: Image of Christ

The Catholic Priest: Image of Christ      Steen Heidemann

Through fifteen centuries of Art. Usually images speak louder than words and are more expressive than words and, therefore, a work devoted to the priesthood acquires a very special dimension when, alongside the various texts, the reader can look at illustrations chosen from paintings of the Old Masters who portrayed eminent priests at various stages of their lives. The priestly minstry is a fundamental element of the Church, exactly as Our Lord Jesus Christ wished. He Himself was and is, for all eternity, the sovereign and eternal Priest of the New Covenant, because, as the Epistle to the Hebrews teaches us. He offered to the Father, on the Cross, the sacrifice of perfect adoration, of thanksgiving, propitiation of sins of the world and the granting of grace for all the spiritual and temporal needs of mankind. In this holiest of Sacrifices which is made by the whole Church every time the Eucharist is celebrated, Christ is present as Priest, Victim and Altar. This is the Catholic image of the priest and this handsome book will greatly help towards appreciating its very rich facets and the endless ways the grace of God shines through each priest for the glory of the Blessed Trinity and the spiritual welfare of the Church and each Christian within Her." -- His Eminence Jorge Cardinal Mendina Estévez. Religious Vocation - An Unnecessary Mystery

Religious Vocation - An Unnecessary Mystery      Fr Richard Butler OP

The question of discerning a vocation is agonized over by many generous young Catholics today. A solid Thomist, who wrote this book in 1961, Father Butler shows that this type of question shows a totally wrong approach to a religious vocation - an approach that began with misguided theology in the 20th century, which then trickled down to the popular level, confusing both aspirants and spiritual directors. Though Fr. Butler deals primarily with vocations to the religious life, he also gives the classic guidelines on priestly vocations. The author states, based on the tradition of the Church, that religious vocation is not uncommon, rare or extraordinary and that it does not require an introspective search for some special voice or attraction. This book provides welcome, intelligent guidance both for spiritual directors and for those considering the religious life or that of the priesthood! [more details...]

Marvels and Miracles

Hungry Souls

Hungry Souls      Gerard J.M. Van Den Aardweg

Supernatural Visits, Messages, and Warnings from Purgatory. After a week of hearing ghostly noises, a man is visited in his home by the spirit of his mother, dead for three decades. She reproaches him for his dissolute life and begs him to have Masses said in her name. Then she lays her hand on his sleeve, leaving an indelible burn mark, and departs... A Lutheran minister, no believer in Purgatory, is the puzzled recipient of repeated visitations from "demons" who come to him seeking prayer, consolation, and refuge in his little German church. But pity for the poor spirits overcomes the man's skepticism, and he marvels at what kind of departed souls could belong to Christ and yet suffer still... Hungry Souls recounts these stories and many others trustworthy, Church-verified accounts of earthly visitations from the dead in Purgatory. Accompanying these accounts are images from the "Museum of Purgatory" in Rome, which contains relics of encounters with the Holy Souls, including numerous evidences of hand prints burned into clothing and books; burn marks that cannot be explained by natural means or duplicated by artificial ones. Fathers and Writers of the First Millennium

NEW Fathers and Writers of the First Millennium      Pope Benedict XVI

The Spiritual Masters. Delightfully illustrated hardback volume containing Pope Benedict's words on key Catholic thinkers. The ten catecheses in this beautifully bound, richly illustrated hardback volume take us back to the historical period immediately following the first Fathers of the Church. Each of the Spiritual Masters described by Pope Benedict left their own mark on the Church’s culture and spirituality and helped in her growth. John Climacus describes the ladder to heaven famously depicted in many icons but also present in the practical counsels he passes on to us in his writings. Bede the Venerable reminds us of the centrality of the Sacred Scriptures as a constant source of theological reflection. St Boniface, Apostle to the Germans and a great organiser, founded the monastery of Fulda in 743 which became the heart and the centre from which a new spiritual and religious culture spread. A less well-known writer from Provence was Ambrose Autpert, who transmits across the centuries his precious theological work on the struggle between good and evil; he was a great defender of sacred images and of the Assumption of Our Lady. John Damascene was a figure of great importance in the history of the Universal Church and of Byzantine theology. St Theodore the Studite bore a vivid and coherent witness to Jesus in turbulent times. Rabanus Maurus was a monk whose writings help put us into contact with the wisdom of the ancients. John Scotus Erigena excelled as a notable thinker and patristic scholar. Sts Cyril and Methodius were brothers united both in the Faith and blood who together committed their lives to missionary work and to sanctity. Through his series of catecheses on the life and works of great witnesses to the faith, Pope Benedict XVI helps us to understand “what it means to be a Christian today.” These portraits of distinguished figures are not just biographical sketches but also provide the ecclesial backdrop against which they lived out their ‘yes’ to Christ. Through the words of the Holy Father, these great saints and teachers of the faith come alive and call us to reawaken and deepen our own faith. [more details...]

Seewald poses such forthright questions to Pope Benedict as:

  • What caused the clergy sexual abuse in the Catholic Church?
  • Was there a "cover up"?
  • Have you considered resigning?
  • Does affirming the goodness of the human body mean a plea for "better sex"?
  • Can there be a genuine dialogue with Islam?
  • Should the Church rethink Catholic teaching on priestly celibacy, women priests, contraception, and same-sex relationships?
  • Holy Communion for divorced-and-remarried Catholics?
  • Is there a schism in the Catholic Church?
  • Should there be a Third Vatican Council?
  • Is there any hope for Christian unity?
  • Is Christianity the only truth?
  • Can the Pope really speak for Jesus Christ?
  • How can the Pope claim to be "infallible"?
  • Is there a dictatorship of relativism today?
Twice before these two men held wide-ranging discussions, which became the best-selling books Salt of the Earth and God and the World. Then, Seewald's discussion partner was Joseph Ratzinger, head of the Vatican's chief doctrinal office. Now, Joseph Ratzinger is Pope Benedict XVI, the spiritual leader of the world's over one billion Catholics.

Though Seewald now interviews the Pope himself, the journalist "pulls no punches", posing some of the thorniest questions any Pope has had to address. Believers and unbelievers will be fascinated to hear Benedict's thoughtful, straightforward and thought-provoking replies. This is no stern preachment or ponderous theological tract, but a lively, fast-paced, challenging, even entertaining exchange.

Reviews
"The extraordinary personal and professional chemistry of Peter Seewald and Joseph Ratzinger has proven itself over the years in previous book-length interviews. Light of the World is Seewald’s latest conversation with the man who is now Pope Benedict XVI — and arguably the most compelling. The Benedict XVI who emerges from these pages is a man of profound faith and intellect, combined with disarming simplicity, and willing to engage any issue frankly and without rancor. For anyone interested in the future of the Church, this book is ‘must’ reading." - +Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Denver

Christ Our High Priest: Spiritual Exercises with Pope Benedict XVI

Christ Our High Priest: Spiritual Exercises with Pope Benedict XVI      Cardinal Albert Vanhoye

Translated by Joel Wallace. 'With a sense of humility and united to the gentle heart of our Lord, I rejoice to be at your service for these Spiritual Exercises. There are many topics that I would like to put before you but I am reassured by the awareness that I am not the main actor. In Spiritual Exercises, the principle actor is clearly the Holy Spirit; otherwise they would not merit being called Spiritual Exercises. Therefore, I suggest to you that, above all, we entrust ourselves with great openess to the guidance of the Holy Spirit who will bring us to understand the Word of God deeply.' - opening words of Cardinal Vanhoye at the beginning of a series of Spritual Exercises preached at the Vatican Feb 2008 in the presence of Pope Benedict XVI. Seventeen spiritual exercises, which as Pope Benedict praised, stating: "From my angle of vision, I have been able to see, on the wall of the Chapel, the image of Jesus kneeling before St Peter in order to wash his feet. Through your meditations, this image has spoken to me. I have recognised that precisely here, in this attitude of extreme humility, the new priesthood of Jesus is realized". [more details...]

St Paul the Apostle

St Paul the Apostle      Pope Benedict XVI

Sensitive to the needs of today's Christians, Pope Benedict XVI uses the teachings of St. Paul as a foundation for encouraging hope and spiritual wisdom within the modern Church. Blinded, then enlightened; Instructed, then sent out to instruct; Imprisoned ... beaten ... shipwrecked ... and ultimately martyred for his faith in Christ the Lord. Few human beings hve experienced such a profound walk with the Lord as St. Paul has. It was his devotion to Christ and willingness to endure any amount of suffering for the sake of His Church that inspired Pope Benedict to declare the Year of Saint Paul. In a series of homilies, Pope Benedict delves into the rich inheritance left to the Church by St. Paul, exploring the timeless story of his history, dramatic conversion, and ministry. As he pastored fledgling churches with words of enouragement, occasional admonishment, and exquisitely profound teaching, St. Paul continues to be a prevailing source of theological wisdom today. Caritas in Veritate

Caritas in Veritate      Pope Benedict XVI

Encyclical Letter on Integral Human Development in Charity and Truth. Pope Benedict's long-awaited social encyclical addressing contemporary challenges facing the world: "Without truth, charity degenerates into sentimentality. In the present social and cultural context, where there is a widespread tendency to relativize truth, practising charity in truth helps people to understand that adhering to the values of Christianity is not merely useful but essential for building a good society and for true integral human development." Caritas in Veritate is the fruit of the Church's reflection on the challenges facing the world today. Pope Benedict seeks to set the moral framework in which such challenges can be addressed, by saying that the charitable desire to work for the good of the world must always be balanced with the need to act in the light of the full truth about humanity. The encyclical addresses the following contemporary themes: * globalisation; * the economic crisis; * the limits of free-market economics; * the environment; * poverty and development; * social inequalities; * the role of technology; * human migration; * consumerism; * population control; * religious freedom; * religious and secularist fundamentalism; * human rights - and their limits. Spe Salvi: Encyclical letter on Christian Hope

Spe Salvi: Encyclical letter on Christian Hope      Pope Benedict XVI

A profound consideration of the virtue of hope. The present day crisis of faith, Pope Benedict argues, is a crisis of Christian hope. In his second encyclical, the Holy Father presents a masterly survey of the abandonment of Christian hope in favour of faith in progress and technology which ultimately led to atheism and Communism and yet more suffering for humanity, whereas man's true hope is not in ideologies but in God who has loved us to the end. The document, which in fact does not refer to previous Papal documents but rather draws in particular on St Augustine and the Fathers of the Church and on several modern Saints and martyrs, ends with an encouragement to foster hope through prayer and to rediscover the practice of offering up our sufferings in order to imbue them with significance. Finally Pope Benedict invites all to see the hope that there is in the judgement of God, in praying for the dead and in the purification of purgatory. [more details...]

Sacramentum Caritatis

Sacramentum Caritatis      Pope Benedict XVI

In this extended reflection on the Eucharist, Pope Benedict underlines the inseparable link between our eucharistic faith and Christian mission. Drawing together the conclusions of his fellow bishops, he calls for a deeper consideration of the inherent mystery, unity, power and vital importance of the identifiable components of the Eucharist. A liturgy, he concludes, that is full of beauty and unity, where the faithful can actively participate with their whole lives, will lead to a renewed missionary zeal, carrying the fruits of communion and belonging that we receive to the whole of our increasingly secular society. Faith and Reason

NEW Faith and Reason      Pope John Paul II

John Paul II’s encyclical on the inextricable link between truth, faith and philosophy. This encyclical develops the Holy Father’s major 1993 document ‘Veritatis Splendor’: philosophy and theology find in revelation their point of contact and comparison. Today, however, various modes of philosophy born of modern thought glorify reason’s debilitation, prevent reason from being what it is, and produce a vision of the human person and of the world which gives pride of place to will-power and pragmatism. The resulting widespread scepticism which reduces everything to opinion and rests content with partial and provisional truths is the malaise of our age. Why is it that our reason prefers to hold back from the truth, when it is the very nature of our reason to attain the truth? The Holy Father defends the greatness of reason. In faith reason finds its most valued help and support, the steadfast ally which allows reason to be what it is. [more details...]

Deus Caritas Est

Deus Caritas Est      Pope Benedict XVI

Deus Caritas Est – God is Love. First Encyclical Letter. "Love is possible, and we are able to practise it because we are created in the image of God. To experience love and in this way to cause the light of God to enter into the world - this is the invitation I would like to extend with the present Encyclical." Pope Benedict XVI’s first encyclical deals with the most fundamental calling of every Christian: that of love. The first part reclaims the often misused word "love" and looks specifically at the "epitome of love", that between a man and a woman. Benedict responds to the claims that Christianity destroyed erotic love by arguing that only when body and soul are united can eros be healed and be restored to its true grandeur. The second part of the encyclical looks at how the love of God and of Christ on the cross urges us on to love our fellow human beings. Individual Christians and the Church as a body must exercise charity and service to all those in need, not motivated by any self-interest nor to take upon herself a political struggle, but simply to make the living God visible. "The anti-culture of death... is thus countered by an unselfish love which shows itself to be a culture of life by the very willingness to ‘lose itself’ for others." [more details...]

Jesus of Nazareth: Volume I

Jesus of Nazareth: Volume I      Pope Benedict XVI

In his first book written as Pope, Benedict XVI shares a personal approach to the figure at the very centre of Christian faith. Accessible and illuminating, Jesus of Nazareth is an antidote to the academic search for the ‘historical’ Jesus. This work by a reigning Pope who is also an accomplished theologian is full of insight, humility and honesty. The Pope has called Jesus of Nazareth, ‘solely an expression of my personal search "for the face of the Lord". Everyone is free, then, to contradict me. I would only ask my readers for that initial willingness to sympathise, without which there can be no understanding.’ The Pope’s fundamental purpose in this book is to restore and renew ‘the interior friendship with Jesus … a figure that makes sense and feels right in historical terms.’ An informative and insightful portrait of the figure that emerges in the Gospels, it is also a deeply spiritual work that contends with the dramatic and provocative questions of faith. Important and valuable to those disillusioned by troubled times and as a remedy to modern historical scepticism, Jesus of Nazareth will engage and provoke thought in anyone who seeks a relationship with God. Jesus of Nazareth: Volume 2

Jesus of Nazareth: Volume 2      Pope Benedict XVI

Holy Week: From the Entrance into Jerusalem to the Resurrection. The second part of the Pope's bestselling book on Jesus Christ as portrayed in Scripture: insightful and authoritative. WHO IS JESUS? Many modern scholars have tried to reinterpret him as a myth, a political revolutionary, a prophet whose teaching was distorted by his followers. In short, anything other than the traditional Christian understanding of him as the Messiah, the Son of God. But Jesus of Nazareth truly is the Son of God, insists Benedict XVI. His theological studies, over many decades, have led this eminent scholar to conclude that proper historical scholarship certainly cannot disprove the Christian claim of Christ's divinity. Indeed, Benedict maintains that the evidence, fairly considered, brings us face-to-face with the challenge of Jesus - a real man who taught and acted with claims of divine authority, claims not so easily dismissed. Benedict XVI presents this challenge in his new book, Jesus of Nazareth - Holy Week, the sequel to his widely acclaimed first volume which attracted praise from Catholic and non-Catholic Christians alike. Spiritual Masters: Fathers and Writers of the First Millennium

Spiritual Masters: Fathers and Writers of the First Millennium      Pope Benedict XVI

Pope John Paul: "We Will Miss You"

Pope John Paul: "We Will Miss You"      Yves Chiron

Saint Pius X is the first pope in modern history to be canonized since Saint Pius V in 1712. The Church canonized him because of the heroic virtues he practiced in his private life and also in the performance of his ecclesiastical duties: Assistant Priest, Pastor, Canon, Episcopal Chancellor, seminary spiritual director, Bishop, Cardinal Patriarch of Venice, and Pope from 1903 to 1914. Yves Chiron's fresh biography breaks new ground by establishing an exact, fair portrait of Saint Pius X, who is often portrayed as a pious pope of great Faith, but "retrograde, simplistic and close minded to modern aspirations and new ideas." The work accomplished by Saint Pius X was monumental. He was not a pietistic simpleton, but a powerful and brilliant defender of the True Faith in the face of the Modernism that was invading the Church even in those days - the beginnings of the Liberalism that resurfaced at Vatican II. Mr. Chiron demonstrates that he was a tireless defender of the rights of the Church against secularism. He was a great reforming pope; restoring Gregorian chant as the sacred music of the Church; reforming the Curia; initiating the codification of Canon Law, and devoting himself especially to reforming the seminaries in order to form pious, zealous young priests, on guard against the creeping infection of Modernism. In researching this book, Yves Chiron draws from many sources, especially from Italy, where this great man, so beloved by his countrymen, rose from being a poor country farm boy to being the Vicar of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. The author was also able to research the Secret Vatican Archives. There is no better "rags - to - riches" story, for he came from a poor but hardworking family and rose to the heights of spiritual riches. This book not only relates the historical events of the Pope's life but offers many personal stories that are like windows into his soul and clearly show his saintly personality. Includes 24 pages of photographs. [more details...]

The Three Marks of Manhood

NEW The Three Marks of Manhood      G.C. Dilsaver

How to be Priest, Prophet and King of Your Family. Author G.C. Dilsaver writes that the time has come for Catholic families to re-discover true patriarchy - time for Catholic men to accept and fulfill their role as leader and head of their families. The role of Christian manhood, as ordained by God and confirmed by Catholic teaching, is symbolized by three staffs: the Scepter of authority and self -discipline, the Crosier of spiritual stewardship, and the Cross of redemptive suffering. Christian husbands and fathers are called by God to a familial headship which is not one of old and obsolete dominance over wife and children which rose out of pagan notions of male superiority. Dilsaver promotes a new and untainted patriarchy in which the husband's ultimate authority is rooted in Christ's example of humility and self sacrificing love. The Three Marks of Manhood can help Christian families realize their identity to the fullest - empowering them to resist the encroachment of secular culture. Read it and learn how to build a strong and lasting marriage, raise children to become faithful men and women of God, and foster an authentic Catholic culture within your home. [more details...]

The Catholic Home

The Catholic Home      Father Alexander, OFM

In this long out-of-print book, Father Alexander, OFM, addresses critical issues concerning home-life such as courtship, marriage, and parenthood. Written during the first World War, home-and family-life were under aggressive attack, while men were away fighting. Since that time the assault has increased and widened. The Catholic Home delivers guidelines and insights in a manner concise enough for the reluctant but erudite enough for the conscientious. Father helps the reader restore home life and all its parts to the central place of honor it deserves. Father Alexander (1854-1941) was a Fransiscan brother and priest. In addition to this work, he authored A Spiritual Retreat, Honour Thy Mother, The Way of Youth, The Third Province, A Mother's Letters, and The Method of Giving Missions and Retreats in General Use Among the Fransiscan Fathers of the English Province. "I hope [this book] will be very widely read by parents-especially by young parents - and by young married couples and youths and maidens who are preparing for the holy state of Matrimony." - Louis Charles Casartelli, Bishop of Salford [more details...]

Motherhood and Family answers the questions, “What does a woman want?" Answer – What a woman is natured to do. “What is a woman natured to do?"—Motherhood and family. First Comes Love

First Comes Love      Scott Hahn

Scott Hahn, in First Comes Love, uses the idea of family to explain Catholic thought about the Trinity. Hahn believes that the relations among the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are a model for the relations among every nuclear unit composed of father, mother, and child. And he believes that the family of the Church helps people emulate the Trinitarian family and can heal them when they fall short of such holiness. Hahn moves easily from personal anecdote to Scriptural analysis, making his case that Jesus understood all of humanity as part of one family when he called his followers brothers, sisters, mothers, and fathers. First Comes Love makes the salutary point that neither romance nor parenthood alone can give us a sufficient sense of belonging. "God built us all to live in a much larger family, to experience a much larger love ... a love that extends infinitely." 'This is a remarkable book' Aidan Nichols OP. [more details...]

The Christian Teacher: Shepherd of Loving Kindness

The Christian Teacher: Shepherd of Loving Kindness      David O'Malley, SDB

Every teacher, working vocationally, is looking for buried treasure. The teacher will unearth the strands of God’s spirit that point to a loving presence at the heart of each person, hidden in relationships, and in the gifts among colleagues and pupils. In tantrums and in tragedies, in celebrations and shared silence, the same spirit of loving kindness will emerge, slipping into and out of focus in our poor spiritual sight. Now we see only dimly what will later become obvious; we need to work with the faith that God is with us. In the vocation to teach, we need a deeper insight to see that it is well worth going the extra mile. This booklet is an attempt to sharpen the awareness of the teacher in recognising opportunities for loving kindness.. It will help teachers support colleagues. Working with the young, there are moments for gratitude and celebration scattered throughout each day. This book is meant to be used to help evaluate that wider unspoken set of expectations that persist after the more measurable elements of teaching have been recorded and analysed. [more details...]

Christian Leadership

Christian Leadership      David O'Malley, SDB

This book considers, in a very practical way, the dilemma of leaders in Christian communities; involved with the delivery of plans, targets and budgets: yet sensitive to the hidden presence of God in all that happens. The aim is help leaders strengthen their awareness of the spiritual dimension of leadership in school and youth groups by looking at the way gospel patterns can emerge through the service of authority in a Christian community. The vocational dimension of carrying responsibility is the main focus of this book: that spiritual thread is traced in the vagaries of planning and building teams, while recognising the spiritual patterns unfolding in ordinary events. Touching that deeper stream of consciousness in leadership gives energy and increased stamina to those who bear the hidden burden of leadership. This book should prove invaluable for all who lead, or aspire to lead, in a Christian community. [more details...]

Pope John Paul II has played a particularly significant rote in Christian initiatives for reconciliation. To help us reflect on this area, in this paper, Fr Peter Hocken looks at the whole area of Repentance for the sins of the past and the significance of the Purification of Memories. Techniques of Icon and Wall Painting

NEW Techniques of Icon and Wall Painting      Aidan Hart

This book is a comprehensive and clear explanation of the techniques and materials needed for egg tempera panel painting, gilding, fresco and secco wall painting, written by someone with over twenty years proffesional experience. Although the context is the icon tradition, the techniques covered will be equally useful for any practitioner and student of these mediums. It also explains the history and theology of these sacred images. The last two decades have seen a bourgeoning interest in icons in the west, as much outside the Orthodox Church as inside it. Icons are being commissioned by Anglican and Roman Catholic cathedrals and churches, as well as by individuals of many denominations. This very broad interest in icons and the attraction of the Orthodox spirituality behind the icon has greatly increased the number of people who want to learn about the art of iconography. Gloriously illustrated in colour and with a foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales. [more details...]

Celtic Christianity: A Sacred Tradition, A Vision of Hope

Celtic Christianity: A Sacred Tradition, A Vision of Hope      Timothy Joyce

This book introduces a mysterious and extraordinary spiritual world, one which drew on pre-Christian beliefs and culture and took form in the church as it developed among the Celtic peoples sixteen centuries ago. Celtic Christianity offers a rediscovery of an ancient tradition that can sustain spiritual seekers and renew the church today. As Timothy Joyce shows, Celtic spirituality appeals to mind, body, and spirit. Joyous and mystical, it affirms the goodness of creation and the gifts of women; it blossoms in poetry, myth, and song. While recounting the heroic tales of saints Patrick, Bridget, and Columcille, Joyce also goes beyond other books, showing how and why this distinctive tradition gradually was subsumed by a more rigid and authoritarian style of Catholocism. Finally, he movingly reflects on the centuries of suffering that have left an indelible mark on Irish consciousness and spirit. [more details...]

A Year with the Church Fathers

NEW A Year with the Church Fathers      Mike Aquilina

A Year with the Church Fathers - Patristic Wisdom For Daily Living. Times change, but human nature does not. Neither do the daily struggles that all Christians experience in their walk with the Lord. Today as two thousand years ago we fight anger, pride, lust, spiritual sloth. Now as then we strive to be more diligent in prayer, more faithful to the commandments, more patient and charitable toward others. And in our time, no less than in the earliest centuries of Christianity, we need wise guidance to direct us on the road to holiness. In A Year with the Church Fathers, popular Patristics expert Mike Aquilina gathers the wisest, most practical teachings and exhortations from the Fathers of the Church, and presents them in a format perfect for daily meditation and inspiration. The Fathers were the immediate inheritors of the riches of the Apostolic Age, and their intimacy with the revelation of Jesus Christ is beautifully evident throughout their theological and pastoral writings: a profound patrimony that is ours to read and cherish and profit from. Learn to humbly accept correction from St. Clement of Rome. Let Tertullian teach you how to clear your mind before prayer. Read St. Gregory the Great and deepen your love for the Eucharist. Do you suffer from pain or illness? St. John Chrysostom's counsels will refresh you. Do you have trouble curbing your appetite for food and other fleshly things? St. John Cassian will teach you the true way to moderation and self-control. A Year with the Church Fathers is different from a study guide, and more than a collection of pious passages. It is a year-long retreat that in just a few minutes every day will lead you on a cycle of contemplation, prayer, resolution, and spiritual growth that is guaranteed to bring you closer to God and His truth. From the Church Fathers we should expect nothing less. Beautiful gift edition, with two- tone ultra soft cover, ribbon marker, and designed interior pages. [more details...]
