Footprints of the Northern Saints
Cardinal Basil Hume, OSB
In 'Footprints Of The Norther Saints', Cardinal Basil Hume invites us to journey with him in the footsteps of the early saints of Northumbria, saints such as Paulinus, Aidan, Hilda and Cuthbert. With enthusiasm and simplicity, he tells the stories of these holy men and women under whose shadow he feels he has lived all his life. He shares why they mean so much to him and reflects on their message for us today. What, for example, does Paulinus say to us about the need for community in our lives? What can we learn from Aidan's simplicity and single-mindedness, or from Cuthbert's love of solitude and silence? Illustrated with stunning photographs of the Northumbrian landscape, 'Footprints Of The Northern Saints' is a beautiful book of profound simplicity.

Saints for the Sick
Joan Carroll Cruz
In this intriguing new book, bestselling author Joan Carroll Cruz presents 76 mini-biographies highlighting saintly Catholics who faced intense, long-term suffering and disability with sweetness, peace and love for Jesus Christ. These stories show the triumph of God s grace where the world finds only ugliness and approaching death. They describe some lives so recent that the saint s family members are still living today, with many causes for canonization being currently active in Rome. Included here are Bl. Zelie Martin, who died of breast cancer; 14-year-old Bl. Isidore Bakanja, the Scapular martyr from Africa; the famous leper priest, St. Damien of Molokai; Venerable Matthew Talbot, the alcoholic; St. Germaine Cousin, rejected because of a birth defect; and little Nennolina Meo, who died from cancer of the bone, lungs and brain. Also included are persons who suffered from paralysis, amputation, deformities, breathing problems, mental illnesses, kidney ailments, intestinal disorders, and more as well as from medical treatment itself. Particularly remarkable are the children who suffered, including young people ages 15, 13, 12, 11 and even 6 ! For these there was no grasping at the remnants of earthly life but rather an eager anticipation of Heaven. These children showed unwavering resolve to suffer for the love of God and the conversion of sinners and they endeavored to console their parents. SAINTS FOR THE SICK is a book that reinforces our Catholic faith and gives renewed hope to those who are dealing with bodily struggles. Moreover, it puts us in touch with heavenly intercessors who will gladly help us for they know exactly what we are going through on earth. Includes an Index of Ailments.

Msgr. Hugh Francis Blunt
Here are over 20 true stories of women who had been guilty of adultery, murder, fornication and abortion, plus engaged in hatred, envy, lying and other sins -- yet found forgiveness, mercy, healing and peace through Our Lord Jesus Christ. These women were as passionate in atonement as they had formerly been in sin. Some had been rejected by their partners in sin; others had to make a supreme effort and tear themselves away. Some had children. Some were punished by civil law. Some had to turn their backs on riches. Some had to disentangle themselves from political relationships. But all converted and spent the rest of their lives doing penance -- a pattern that will be repeated till the End of Time by many other Great Magdalens.

St Albert the Great: Champion of Faith & Reason
Kevin Vost
Even while he was still alive, Dominican friar Albert of Cologne was widely called Magnus the Great. His contemporaries said Saint Albert simply knew all there was to know; he was a scientist, theologian, and philosopher; a teacher, preacher, and negotiator; a shrewd shepherd and an unflinching defender of the Faith. The time has come to re-discover St. Albert s greatness, and to profit from his prodigious wisdom and virtue as did his famous student, St. Thomas Aquinas. Author Kevin Vost presents St. Albert s brilliant scholarly career at the height of the Church s intellectual renewal in the thirteenth century. St. Albert was tireless (and courageous) in his leadership and works of reform as a Dominican provincial and diocesan bishop. Desperate popes pressed him into diplomatic missions, hoping that Magnus might succeed in making peace where lesser men had failed. These pages not only tell St. Albert s story they share his lessons. Each chapter uses Albertine teachings, and the witness of the saint s life, to instruct, edify, and inspire us to greater holiness and more ardent love. Read St. Albert and see why the greatest man of his age has great things to offer our age as well.

Blessed Alexandrina: A living miracle of the Eucharist
Kevin Rowles
Blessed Alexandrian Maria da Costa of Portugal (1904-1955), one of the great mystics of modern times, was beatified by Pope John Paul II in 2004. A 'victim soul', chosen by Christ to suffer in atonement for the sins of humanity, she was bedridden for life from the age of twenty after sustaining injuries while escaping from an attacker. She mystically underwent the Passion of Christ on Fridays, and her astounding life has many connections to the events of Fatima and she is known in Portugal as 'the fourth seer of Fatima'. She urged all to 'Do penance, sin no more, pray the Rosary, receive the Eucharist'. For the last thirteen years of her life she miraculously lived on the Holy Eucharist alone, a medically confirmed fact. New larger edition, with numerous colour and black and white photographs.

Saint Bernadette Soubirous
Abbe Francois Trochu
Excellent book on St Bernadette Soubirous, which is a two-fold story, that of the apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary at Lourdes, France in 1858, as well as that of the 14-year-old peasant girl - raised in dire poverty and unable to read - to who Our Lady appeared. But more, it is also the story of St Bernadette's hidden life as a seemingly ordinary nun in her convent at Nevers, where she reached such holiness that after her death, God saw fit to preserve her body incorrupt - as it remains to this day! Beautifully illustrated with 69 photographs, including lovely photos of St. Bernadette's incorrupt body (she died in 1879). The Dialogue of St Catherine of Siena
Saint Catherine of Siena
St. Catherine of Siena is recognized as one of the most remarkable mystical theologians of the Middle Ages. She was also a stigmatist, counsellor of popes and is one of only three women to be made a Doctor of the Church. The Dialogue of St. Catherine of Siena treats of the whole spiritual life of man in the form of a series of colloquies between the Eternal Father and the human soul (represented by Catherine herself). The structure of the Dialogue is unusual: the saint makes four petitions to God – for herself, for the Church, for the whole world, and for the assurance of God’s providence in all things. The rest of the book is devoted to God’s response to these four petitions.

Dewi Saint: Saint David Patron of Wales
J B Midgley
March 1st is St David's Day, the national day of Wales and has been celebrated as such since the twelfth century. Descended from Welsh royalty, he was an ascetic and as a missionary travelled thoroughout Wales and Britain. He was consecrated bishop in Jerusalem, and founded many monasteries, including one at St David's, which he made his episcopal seat, later becoming Archbishop of Wales. St David died in Menevia on 1 March 589 AD, believed to be over 100 years old. This new book traces the background and heritage of this Apostle of Wales, still relevant for the new evangelisation today. 'In dedicating the mosaic in honour of St.David at Westminster Cathedral, Pope Benedict spoke of the great debt owed by Christian Europe to the great saints and missionaries of the sixth century of which David was one. David's preaching was simple yet profound. It was summed up in his final words: "Be joyful, keep the faith, and do the little things." Jesus reminds us that if we are faithful in little things we will be faithful in great things too. May this book on St.David inspire us to be faithful in all things.' - George Stack, Archbishop of Cardiff

Life of the Good Thief
Monsignor Gaume
Advocate of God and consoler of Mary, this is the story of the "first" thief, whose wonderful eleventh hour conversion and defense of the holy Kingship of Christ on Calvary, merited him the everlasting title, "The Good." Monsignor Gaumé opens his book with a graphic, even ugly, description of the true face of a highway brigand in the days of the Caesars. He presents the first meeting of our Egyptian thief and the Son of God in the idolatrous land of the Pharaohs on the occasion of the flight of the impoverished Holy Family away from the sword of Herod. The rest of this profoundly inspiring account begins on the "Mount of the Skull." It is the story of the Passion as seen through this most unlikely of characters. Meet Dismas; a dying man whose only request from his "Lord" was but a "remembrance" in His Kingdom! Rejoice for a man who was the first to be with Christ "in Paradise."

Edmund Campion - A Life
Evelyn Waugh
Evelyn Waugh presented his biography of St. Edmund Campion, the Elizabethan poet, scholar and gentleman who became the haunted, trapped and murdered priest as “a simple, perfectly true story of heroism and holiness.” But it is written with a novelist's eye for the telling incident and with all the elegance and feeling of a master of English prose. From the years of success as an Oxford scholar, to entry into the newly founded Society of Jesus and a professorship in Prague, Campion's life was an inexorable progress towards the doomed mission to England. There followed pursuit, betrayal, a spirited defence of loyalty to the Queen, and a horrifying martyr’s death at Tyburn.

Elizabeth Prout: 1820-1864
Edna Hamer
A Religious Life for Industrial England. A revised edition of this classic biography of a remarkable woman, a heroine of the Industrial Revolution who immersed herself in the chaos of Manchester's worst slums and brought comfort, education and hope to the poorest of the poor - the largely Irish and immigrant Catholic mill workers. All this was almost incidental to her overriding vocation, for Elizabeth Prout was the founder of a religious order whose members were themselves mainly from working-class backgrounds. Without endowments or wealthy patrons, these Sisters of the Cross and Passion worked tirelessly both to support themselves and to help the slum dwellers amongst whom they lived.

The Life of Saint Francis of Assisi
St Bonaventure
Life of St Francis of Assisi. "Francis, go and build up My house, which thou seest, is falling into ruin." To fulfil this command of Our Lord, St Francis of Assisi (1181-1226) began by restoring physical churches and continued by building up the spiritual Church in souls. Francis' humility, purity, and true joy inspired many to conversion and a deeper faith. Never ordained a priest, St. Francis nonetheless was a preacher and a miracle-worker of the first order - curing, prophesying, casting out devils, turning water into wine, and raising people from the dead. The Life of St Francis of Assisi by St Bonaventure conveys a picture of the Saint that renders an indelible impression of a man totally transformed by God.

Introduction to the Devout Life (Tan)
St Francis de Sales
As no sensible person would make a long road trip without first consulting a map, so the person intent upon gaining Heaven should first resort to a competent guide to reach that Goal of all goals. And no better guide to Heaven exists than An Introduction to the Devout Life by St. Francis de Sales (1567-1622), Doctor of the Church. It is at once easy to read, being laid out in short chapters, yet thorough, authoritative, reliable, kind and gentle a mirror of its author. It is a book, moreover, for all, because all are called to the devout life. True devotion to God, the author points out, adorns every vocation. The devout life, moreover, is a lovely, a pleasant, and a happy life. (p. 5) Addressed as a personal letter to Philothea, the lover of God which genuinely represents the reader the book covers: our first desire to lead a devout life to our full resolution to do so, how we should approach God in prayer and the Sacraments, the practice of 16 important virtues, remedies against ordinary temptations, and becoming confirmed in our practice of devotion. St. Francis says, Devotion is spiritual agility and vivacity, by means of which charity works in us, or we in her, with love and readiness; and as charity leads us to obey and fulfill all God s Commandments, so devotion leads us to obey them with promptitude and diligence. (p. 3) An Introduction to the Devout Life is a book to be read with pencil in hand. It is a book to be read again and again. It is a book to make your guide for the rest of your life. It goes to the heart of becoming good. Its aim is to help you be rid of sin and even the inclinations to sin. Alone, its 10 brief meditations in Part I will orient you toward God for the rest of your life. No one will come away without being profoundly impressed and without being motivated to enter upon the devout life . . . which leads ultimately to God and to Heaven. New edition with updated typesetting, fresh new cover, new size and quality binding, and the original trusted content.

Remembering Inigo: Glimpses of the Life of Saint Ignatius of Loyola
Luis Goncalves da Camara
This 'Memoriale of Goncalves da Camara' gives us an intimate picture of Saint Ignatius of Loyola as a person and as a religious superior. Da Camara was chosen by Ignatius to record his personal recollections on his own religious experiences and development, later to become known as Ignatius's Autobiography. Here da Camara records concrete examples of how Ignatius actually behaved, how he treated those in varying states of Jesuit life, how he prayed and celebrated Mass. The picture of Ignatius he provided is astonishing even to Jesuits, showing Ignatius' very fallible human side, and Roman authorities for long were uncertain whether to allow publication of the work, only granted in 1904. Nonetheless it provides us with a valuable insight into a man who towered in sanctity and vision among his contemporaries and still does so today.

Blessed John Henry Newman: Theologian and Spiritual Guide for Our Times
Fr Keith Beaumont
The official authorised biography, prepared for Newman's beatification. Beautiful colour-illustrated hardback. This official biography is written by an Australian priest of the Oratoire de France and destined to be read by those from the world over who will gather in September to see Newman beatified. They will find in this book an extraordinary grasp of Newman’s significance and a genius for making it known. It is illustrated throughout with beautiful photographs that bring to life Newman and his world. John Henry Newman is a figure of immense significance for the Universal Church. His prophetic voice continues to speak far beyond the confines of 19th-century England. Almost every issue of significance for the Church today is enlightened by reference to his spirit, life and thought. The relationship of these three elements, the spiritual, the moral and the intellectual, is at the heart of Fr Keith Beaumont’s book, the official biography commissioned for the beatification. Fr Beaumont’s biography gives a clear account of all the major themes of Newman’s life and work, with judicious use of citations from this work so that Newman’s thought is in almost every case conveyed in his own words. Fr Beaumont also directs us to some lesser known sources to give us a balanced and complete view of the subtlety of Newman’s thought.

Lead Kindly Light: The Life of John Henry Newman
Michael Davies
The author refutes the myth of Cardinal Newman’s Liberalism and supports what Newman himself said “For thirty, forty, fifty years I have resisted to the best of my powers the spirit of Liberalism in religion.” St. Pius X came to Newman’s defense against those accusing Newman of Liberalism and said “. . . they should follow Newman the author faithfully by studying his books . . . let them understand his pure and whole principles, his lessons and inspiration. . . .” Pope Pius XII described him as “the pride of Britain and the Universal Church.” The reason that Newman can be so easily misrepresented is because relatively few Catholics are familiar with his writing. The object of this book is not simply to recount the life of England’s greatest convert but to provide the reader with sufficient selections of Newman’s writing to make it clear that St. Pius X was fully justified in exonerating him from the charge of Modernism. John Henry Newman was declared venerable on January 22, 1991. Fully illustrated, 60 lb. cream paper, sewn signatures, gold embossed hardcover.

The Founder of Opus Dei: The Life of Jose Maria Escriva - 3 Volume Set - hardback
Andres Vazquez De Prada
This three volume set on the life of Saint Josemaria Escriva, the founder of Opus Dei, consists of: Volume 1: The Life of Jose Maria Escriva: The Early Years, ISBN: 978188933425, 655 pages; Volume 2: God and Daring, ISBN: 9781889334851, 524 pages, Volume 3: The Divine Ways on Earth, ISBN: 9781594170256, 574 pages. Volume 1: Saint Josemaria Escriva has been hailed as a pioneer in helping ordinary Christians find God in their daily lives. Moved as a teenager by footprints of a barefoot Carmelite priest in the snow, Josemaria felt called to greater generosity in the priesthood and in his struggles to build up Opus Dei during the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. This latest biography is the most extensively researched work on his family history, childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood. The reader benefits from an enormous wealth of details in extensive notes and appendices. Accompanying them are excerpts from his correspondence, spiritual writings and testimonials from dozens of friends and acquaintances. Volume 2: covers one of the most remarkable periods of his life: from the outbreak of the civil war in 1936 to his departure for Rome in 1946. In Republican Spain fierce anti-Catholic persecution led St. Josemaria to do his priestly work in secret, fully aware that if caught, he would be executed - as were 6000 other priests. This book recounts the saint's dangerous journey across the Pyrenees to the Nationalist zone, where he could exercize his priestly ministry more freely, his tireless labors to counter (with both heroic charity and determination) the slanders that threatened to overwhelm Opus Dei, and more. Here is an unforgettable picture of the saint's activity during the years of crisis that threatened to obliterate his great gift to the church: Opus Dei. Volume 3: Dream, and your dreams will fall short, Saint Josemaria Escriva told early members of Opus Dei. This third and final volume of the most extensively researched work on the founder of Opus Dei covers his years in Rome, from 1946 until his death there in 1975. It describes how Opus Dei overcame major obstacles and blossomed from a handful of members in Spain into a worldwide institution, with more than 60,000 members of 80 nationalities. Andres Vazquez de Prada, a Spanish diplomat, writer, and historian who knew Saint Josemaria personally, narrates the story, using previously unpublished letters, diaries, and other sources from the archives of the Prelature of Opus Dei.

Favors of St Jose Maria Escriva
Flavio Capucci
From the moment he died, people all over the world began to call upon St. Josemaria. Rome received more than 120,000 signed claims of those testimonies, collected and edited by Msgr. Flavio Capucci, postulator for the cause of St. Josemaria's canonization. These are first-person accounts - often by the very people who received the favors - of how St. Josemaria rescued people from: Alcoholism, heroin addiction, and other addictions; Broken marriages and infidelity; Broken families and estrangement between parents and children; Infertility and difficult pregnancies; Loneliness and inability to find a mate; Suicidal depression, anorexia, and other devastating emotional problems. This book even contains accounts of how St. Josemaria helped them find lost objects and deal with small domestic annoyances. As Msgr. Joaquin Alonso (who worked with St. Josemaria for twenty years) explains in his foreword, this emphasizes that God's love extends to the smallest details of life, and that it is every Christian's privilege and duty to live a life of holiness whatever his or her state in life: married or single, sick or well, young or old, poor or rich. These testimonies demonstrate the immense power of St. Josemaria's intercession and of the mercy of the God Whom the saint loved and served so well.

The Life of Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey & Mary's House in Ephesus
Rev. Carl G Schulte C.M.
The Life of Sr. Marie de Mandat-Grancey and Mary's House in Ephesus tells the story of a faith-filled woman's life of service and her quest to discover the house of the Blessed Virgin in Ephesus. Sister Marie de Mandat-Grancey, a Daughter of Charity, responded to God's call and dedicated her life to find Christ, the Word made Flesh, in service to the poor. The first twenty-five years of her ministry were spent caring for the homebound, educating children, accompanying youth in their spiritual journey, and finding families for orphans. In 1886, Sister Marie was sent to Smyrna, near Ephesus, Turkey, where she entered a world very different from her own. While serving in the hospital there, Sister Marie read and shared with her own Sisters and the local Vincentian priests The Life of the Blessed Virgin, by Anne Catherine Emmerich, which recorded the events of Mary's last years spent in Ephesus in a house built for her by St. John. Because of Sister Marie's great devotion to the Blessed Mother, she was determined to find this sacred spot. Through collaboration with her Vincentian brothers, local Muslim guides, and the people of the area, Mary's house was found; but the discovery was just the beginning. Once rebuilt, Mary's house became a place where Muslims and Christians assembled in peace side by side as they came to honour Mary. "In these times, in which the tension between East and West between Christians and Muslims seems to be growing ever more intense the witness, example, and intercession of Sr. Marie is so desperately needed. Together let us pray with her in honor of Mary, the Mother of Holy Hope, in sincere hope and longing that the Lord will touch us all with His peace.." -- (Most Rev.) Michael J. Higgins, TOR

Marcel Van - The Triumph of Love
Catherine St-Pierre
Marcel Van (1928-1959). Exposed to harassment and abuse from his early childhood, Van, a young Vietnamese, was all the same haunted by a desire for sanctity and the priesthood. At his Communion on Christmas Eve, 1940, the mysterious meaning of suffering was revealed to him. He confided: "My soul was transformed in an instant. I was no longer afraid of suffering... God gave me a mission: to change suffering into joy." Soon "Little Therese" of Lisieux made herself known to the one she affectionately called "my little brother." From day to day she taught him the secrets of spiritual childhood and the love of God. Van eventually became a Redemptorist Lay Brother, and from that time on, his love for God and neighbour seemed to know no bounds. Arrested and imprisoned by the Communists, he died of exhaustion in a concentration camp, his soul nonetheless overflowing with joy, on July 10, 1959. "I am the victim of Love, and Love is all my happiness: an indestructible happiness..." Illustrated.

The Prophecies of St Malachy
Peter Bander
The short, cryptic prophecies of St. Malachy, the Primate of Ireland, made circa 1140 while on a visit at Rome, about each Pope from his time till the End of Time--all based on visions he had at the time. From what we know of recent Popes, these prophecies are accurate, based on interior evidence alone. What is so very sobering is the fact there are only 2 Popes left after Pope John Paul II!!

Margaret of Castello
Alan Frost
Patroness of the disabled and marginalised. Margaret's story shows how God has a purpose for even the most unfortunate and disadvantaged; that his gifts may shine strongly in any of us, whatever our situation in this life. Young, small, blind, lame, unattractive, a hunchback who was rejected by her parents, in today's world she would probably have been another victim of abortion. Yet, despite her severe disadvantages, 'Little Margaret' emerged as an exemplary model of selfless love. Invoked as the patroness of the disabled and unwanted, there now exist shrines to her in America where she is revered. In recognition of her intercession she was beatified, and now the cause for her canonisation is progressing in Rome.

Brother Roger and Taize
Fr Bryan Wells
Taizé in eastern France is a world-famous centre of ecumenical prayer and pilgrimage, attracting hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, especially young people. This booklet explores both the place itself, giving practical advice for people travelling there, and the man behind it, Brother Roger Schutz. Born and raised in Switzerland where he became the leader of the Swiss Student Christian Movement, Brother Roger arrived in Taizé amidst the Nazi invasion of France in 1940, convinced that his calling was to help the poor. For the next 65 years, up to his tragic death in 2005, he worked to bring all people closer to Christ through prayer and reflection. That desire is still key to the work of the Taizé Community today. Fr. Bryan Wells is priest-in-charge of St. James the Great, Petts Wood, in the Archdiocese of Southwark and a former Anglican priest.

The Life of Thomas More
William Roper
There have been many books (plays and movies) of this great saint, but this book, written by St. Thomas More’s son-in-law, is the definitive one. This book, while scrupulously preserving the diction of the original manuscript, endeavours to remove some of the accidental barriers between Roper’s book and his modern reader—to carefully update some of the spellings and punctuation. But Roper’s book remains “old”—nearly four centuries old. The only things changed were obstacles to the enduring truth, and the understanding of that truth. Beautifully illustrated, gold embossed hardcover with full colour applique, 60 lb. cream paper.

Wife, Mother and Mystic
Albert Bessieres, S.J.
Translated by Rev Stephen Rigby. The story of Blessed Anna-Maria Taigi, a woman singled out at the age of twenty-one, to receive revelations from Our Lord and the Blessed Mother, which continued until her death. In her visions she foresaw much of the political turmoil that took place during her life most significantly the French Revolution and subsequent weakening of the Church's temporal authority. She also read the state of souls, both living and dead. Despite these miraculous gifts, she was content to fulfil her station in life as the wife of a poor serving-man and the mother of seven children. Wife, Mother and Mystic chronicles the events of an extraordinary life and yet, the great lesson of this biography is not found in the extraordinary, but in this modest woman's constant, hidden "striving after holiness" in her most ordinary tasks.

The Lauds
Jacopone da Todi
Jacopone da Todi c. (1230-1306) entered the Order of Friars Minor during the last quarter of the thirteenth century when the conflict between the Franciscan Conventuals and Spirituals was raging. His lauds, which long have had an established place in the history of Italian poetry, sing the praises of poverty, insist on the supremacy of the love of God above all other loves, and inveigh against the worldliness of the Church under the reign of Pope Boniface VIII. In this volume, Serge and Elizabeth Hughes have given us a fresh, highly-readable rendition of Jacopone's poetry. Writing in the introduction to this book, Professor Serge Hughes describes Jacopone's significance for today: " We continue to turn to this work after seven centuries…because of the intensities of Jacopone-his descent into the self and his search for and struggle with God."

Thy Kingdom Come: The Life and Mission of Luisa Piccarreta
Hugh Owen
Invited by the Blessed Virgin Mary, Luisa Piccarreta offered herself to the Lord as a victim of love and reparation when she was 17 years old. From this point on, she was slightly more than 64 years in bed, without being sick, and was nourished almost exclusively on the Eucharist. By obedience to her confessor, on February 28, 1899, she began to write her spiritual diary and finished on December 28, 1938. Her education consisted of only first grade studies. She had an extraordinary confessor and censor of her writings, the now canonized St Hannibal Di Francia. With many photographs, and extracts from her writings, and information about the cause for her beatification.
