Hilaire Belloc

Hilaire Belloc   Karl Schmude
The astounding life of the famous English writer, historian and controversialist. History has been less kind to Belloc than to his great friend and collaborator Chesterton. Yet for several decades at the turn of the twentieth century, he was considered one of the great literary figures of the age. President of the Oxford Union as a student and later on a Member of Parliament, it was Belloc’s vigorous desire to defend Christendom against the attacks of socialism, capitalism and secularism that inspired much of his writing. The Crisis of Civilisation

The Crisis of Civilisation   Hilaire Belloc
Here the great Belloc shows that ever since the disaster of the Protestant Reformation, Western civilization (which was formed by the Catholic Faith) has been coming apart - since Calvinism opened the door to usury, unbridled competition, the domination of the mind by money, and ultimately the return of slavery. Belloc says our 2 choices are a return to Catholicism or chaos! Essential for anyone who would understand our world today! [more details...]

The Path to Rome

The Path to Rome   Hilaire Belloc
This is the delightful story of the pilgrimage Belloc made on foot to Rome in order to fulfil a vow he had made “. . . and see all Europe which the Christian Faith has saved . . . .” In the Life of Hilaire Belloc Robert Speaight states: “More than any other book he ever wrote, The Path to Rome made Belloc’s name; more than any other, it has been lovingly thumbed and pondered . . . . The book is a classic, born of something far deeper than the physical experience it records.” G. K. Chesterton says “. . . He will be a lucky man who can escape . . . into the flaming and reverberating folly of The Path to Rome.” Includes over 70 excellent illustrations by the author himself. First published in 1902. Now re-published in a beautiful leatherette edition. 60 lb. quality cream paper, sewn signatures [more details...]

The Essential Belloc - A Prophet for Our Times

The Essential Belloc - A Prophet for Our Times   Scott Bloch, et al
Hilaire Belloc was a poet, polemicist, and prose stylist without peer, but above all, an entire generation's mighty champion for the Catholic faith. The Essential Belloc, a timely new compilation of his insights on religion, politics, Western history and culture, is perfect for Catholics struggling against secularism. Included are his lighter musings on the particular charms of towns and peoples throughout the world, the love of good food and drink, and the songs of camaraderie that go with them. This is the perfect book for those who know and love Belloc and for those not yet familiar with the brilliance and humor found in his prose. "His range of brilliance as a writer have been matched by very few moderns. The Essential Belloc is an invaluable resource and hugely enjoyable reading. " - Charles J Chaput, O.F.M. Cap., Archbishop of Denver "Belloc believed that party and state are not all powerful, that the Church and Family have a primary place... We need him now more than ever." - Senator Rick Santorum, author of It Takes A Family "History, politics, sailing, religion, taverns, economics - his pen, like his sardonic wit and melancholy wisdom, never fails." - David Whalen, Associate Provost, Hillsdale College "An affectionate and appreciative study of Hilaire Belloc, that splendid writer, modern prophet, and morally courageous defender of the Faith." - Patrick J Buchanan. G K Chesterton: A Biography

G K Chesterton: A Biography   Ian Ker
G. K. Chesterton is remembered as a brilliant creator of nonsense and satirical verse, author of the Father Brown stories and the innovative novel, The Man who was Thursday, and yet today he is not counted among the major English novelists and poets. However, this major new biography argues that Chesterton should be seen as the successor of the great Victorian prose writers, Carlyle, Arnold, Ruskin, and above all Newman. Chesterton's achievement as one of the great English literary critics has not hitherto been fully recognized, perhaps because his best literary criticism is of prose rather than poetry. Ian Ker remedies this neglect, paying particular attention to Chesterton's writings on the Victorians, especially Dickens. As a social and political thinker, Chesterton is contrasted here with contemporary intellectuals like Bernard Shaw and H. G. Wells in his championing of democracy and the masses. Pre-eminently a controversialist, as revealed in his prolific journalistic output, he became a formidable apologist for Christianity and Catholicism, as well as a powerful satirist of anti-Catholicism. This full-length life of G. K. Chesterton is the first comprehensive biography of both the man and the writer. It draws on many unpublished letters and papers to evoke Chesterton's joyful humour, his humility and affinity to the common man, and his love of the ordinary things of life. "magisterial new biography" - The Catholic Herald. [more details...]

Twelve Types of Chesterton

Twelve Types of Chesterton   G K Chesterton    NEW
Twelve Types is a collection of short biographical essays, by one of 20th-century England's greatest essayists. In keeping with the spirit of IHS Press, that there is a Catholic way to look at everything, this book evaluates the place of such figures as Tolstoy, St. Francis, Savonarola, William Morris, and others, in the history of the West and from an unabashedly Catholic perspective. With typical wit and flair, Chesterton accomplishes what modern biography most often fails to do: discuss the important and central elements of the characters it presumes to examine, while omitting tedious discussion on matters of little import. Chesterton looks at the souls, the characters, and the lives of some of the West's most important figures, providing modern readers with a sane and Catholic orientation to their approach to these great individuals. Originally published: London, 1905. IHS Press is pleased to present a new Preface to this edition by Dr. Malcolm Brennan. Malcolm Brennan is Professor Emeritus of English Literature at the Citadel, South Carolina, and is the author of numerous works, including a collection of essays on the history of the English martyrs. The social doctrine isn't just about economics. Make this slim volume part of your Catholic cultural library today! [more details...]

Orthodoxy

Orthodoxy   G K Chesterton
The most brilliant book of apologetics in the English language. Chesterton wrote Orthodoxy in 1908 in response to a challenge from one of his readers to state his creed. Rarely has any challenge been more gloriously and chivalrously met. This is early Chesterton at his best: sparkling paradoxes, breathtaking wordplay, trenchant argument and blinding logic. The reader is treated to a witty and insightful work, that illustrates how reasonable orthodoxy really is, despite the attacks of its critics. The book also provides a spiritual autobiography, as Chesterton employs his own discovery of orthodox Christianity in order to defend its beauty and its sanity against modern secular schools of philosophy. The book manages to intellectually challenge the reader, while still appealing to a child-like sense of awe at the world around us. [more details...]

Ronald Knox and English Catholicism

Ronald Knox and English Catholicism   Terry Tastard
Ronald Knox was hailed as one of the brightest minds of the Edwardian era, and his decision to become a Catholic shocked many of his contemporaries. He was to be one of the most outstanding recruits to the Church of his generation, and for thirty years he was one of the best known personalities of English Catholicism. A gifted writer and broadcaster, Knox raised the self-confidence of the Catholic Church and showed how Catholicism was now once more at home in England. Knox's writing, broadcasting and preaching made a profound impact on his fellow Catholics and his lucid expositions of Christian teaching found a wide audience. Educated at Eton and Balliol, he demonstrated, as Newman had before him, that an Englishman of his background could be at ease in the Catholic Church. The Church was able to make full use of his talents, as teacher and priest, and as Catholic chaplain to Oxford University in the inter-war years. Renowned for his Bible translations, Knox also wrote detective stories and sparkling satire. His cultivated background and capacity for friendship made him a welcome figure in society, he was famous for his wit - yet sometimes he wrestled with his own melancholy. His close friendships included Harold Macmillan and Evelyn Waugh, who wrote a biography of Knox two years after his death. Waugh's biography is, of course, a literary tour de force, but fifty years on the life of this brilliant and complex priest can now be set in the context of his own times, and of ours. Terry Tastard is a priest of Westminster Diocese and a Research Associate of the Von Hügel Institute, St Edmund's College, Cambridge. [more details...]

John Henry Newman: Parochial and Plain Sermons

John Henry Newman: Parochial and Plain Sermons   John Henry Newman
All eight volumes of Newman's famous sermons are brought together in this new edition that is beautifully printed and bound on Bible paper with a flexible leatherette cover and red ribbon. Newman's sermons are as powerful, fresh and challenging today as when he first gave them. The topics that Newman covers are ones central to Christianity and salvation. Newman once again demonstrates his profound understanding of human psychology, and the temptations and trials we encounter as Christians in the world. This deluxe edition is a magnificent work of timeless inspiration and illumination for every generation of Christian readers. 191 sermons in total. "These sermons are given here, for the first time in a single volume, as the most lasting expression of Newman's own gradual discovery of all the fullness of the appeal and the challenge addressed to all men by Catholic truth and Catholic life, inseparable as they are within genuine Christianity. There, above all, he himself will be found, with his intellectual power, his poetical vision, as well as his moral and spiritual integrity. Nothing can constitute for us, still today, and maybe today more than ever, such a powerful introduction to what Christianity may give to and expect from our surrender to its call in the midst of a world no longer pretending to be Christian." Prayers, Verses and Devotions

Prayers, Verses and Devotions   John Henry Newman    NEW
A beautifully bound, Bible paper volume of Newman's most profound devotional writings. His meditations on the Litany of Loreto for the month of May, and on the Stations of the Cross are already recognized as classics of Catholic spirituality. And in his meditations on Christian doctrine Newman shows that the source of true piety is sound teaching. His verses on various occasions are profoundly inspiring as are the spiritual hymns and canticles which distill the wisdom of the incomparable Newman. In addition, also included are the devotions of Bishop Lancelot Andrewes, translated by Newman himself and used by him as the primary source of his own spiritual life. Louis Bouyer, the greatest living Newman scholar, says of these: "Newman quite believed that in these exercises of Andrewes he had discovered that form of prayer which springs directly from the word of God and leads to a life fully lived in Christ. Not only as a priest, but later on as a cardinal of the Roman church, he would keep the Preces privatae on his kneeler for his daily preparation and thanksgiving before and after Mass and for his most personal meditations." Meditations and Devotions

Meditations and Devotions   Cardinal John Henry Newman
To pray is to be a Christian, to be a Saint is to have prayed often. John Henry Cardinal Newman was a man of prayer and this book contains the culmination of his prayers and devotions, divided into three sections. The first and second parts contain the vocal prayers he wrote for public use, the litanies – the Stations of the Cross and short meditations. The long meditations in the third part of the book are intended for private use, which draw one into a deeper sense of intimacy with Our Lord. The prayers are also a testament to his particular devotion to Our Lady with moving commentaries on her several titles from the Litany of Loreto. These are tender and profound, yet without any trace of sentimentality.Newman’s meditations are full of doctrine. Doctrine is the expression of Truth, and above all things, Newman longed to bear witness to the Truth. It is from the Scriptures, the Church Fathers and the living Church that Newman drew his doctrine, and in his meditations he made it his own. Size 4" x 6", leather bound flexible cover. The Idea of a University

The Idea of a University   Cardinal John Henry Newman
No man was ever better qualified to write such a book as The Life of a University than Cardinal Newman was. And the subject has never been more pressing than it is today. In this classic, Newman poses a number of important questions: What is the purpose of education? What does it mean to be educated? What is the role of a university? What is the relationship between learning and the life of a society? And where does Catholicism fit in? The issues Newman examined with incomparable insight continue to be relevant today, one hundred and fifty years after it was first published. This book has been recognized as probably the greatest of its kind, and no one interested in the relationship between religion, learning, culture and politics can afford to neglect it. English Catholic Heroines

English Catholic Heroines   Edited by Joanna Bogle
Through the great men and women of the English Church we can see the continuous inspiration of the Catholic Faith in England as an unbroken tradition shaping life and work, history and culture, for more than fourteen centuries. In this book a group of distinguished authors with varying interests, champion the achievements of twenty-three seminal figures in the history of the English Church - from the seventh century to the present time - who through their Catholic witness have made a contribution to the spiritual, intellectual, ethical and physical welfare of the nation which can be fairly described as 'heroic'. Heroism takes many different forms. Self-evidently heroic are the martyrs of the penal years who sacrificed their lives for the sake of the Faith, others earn their place in this book because their achievements in many different fields of endeavour are truly heroic - as queens, wives and mothers, in education, nursing and social teaching, in journalism and literature, and in challenging the nation's conscience and our national consciousness. The continuity of the Catholic witness in England is often overlooked because of the dislocation caused by the English Reformation, the three subsequent centuries of suppression of the Church, and the rewriting of history to create a new national myth. However, in these lives we can see the impact of Catholicism across the centuries and find inspiration for our own times. Joanna Bogle, Leonie Caldecott , Simon Caldwell, Judith Champ, Mgr Antony Conlon, Mark Elvins OFMCap., Patti Fordyce, Andrea Fraile, Dominic Savio Hamer CP, Etheldreda Hession OSB, Emily Keyte, Mac McLernon, Dora Nash, Fiorella Nash, Josephine Robinson, Penny Roker RSM, Tracey Rowland, Gemma Simmonds CJ, Pauline J. Roads to Rome

Roads to Rome   John Beaumont    25% OFF
A Guide to Notable Converts from Britain and Ireland from the Reformation to the Present Day. Preface by Marcus Grodi; Foreword by Joseph Pearce; Appendixes by Stanley Jaki. To be a Christian is to be a convert. The word “convert” applies in a real sense both to cradle-born Catholics and to those, traditionally regarded as converts, who become Catholics as adults. The Catholic Church is the divinely established framework of the program of a conversion, which Christ presented as a thorough change of mind and heart (metanoia). While for a cradle-born Catholic the implementation of that program is usually a gradual process, for converts it contains a momentous act as they vote, so to speak, with their feet, on behalf of Truth, by joining the Church as the One True Fold, the Sole Ark of Salvation, to recall hallowed phrases dear to John Henry Newman, easily the greatest convert during the nineteenth century. The aim of this book is to summarize the lives of notable converts from Britain and Ireland and explain (by reference to quotations from their writings) why they entered the Catholic Church. These reasons were many. Some looked chiefly at history and saw the apostolic Church in their day to be residing in the Catholic communion. Others, though appreciating the fact of the gift of faith, saw reason as the chief support of the step they were taking. To yet others it was the endurance of both the Church and that remarkable office of the papacy that proved the necessary stimulus. Many were inspired by the witness of some unsung saint in their neighbourhood. Some were eminent even before their “move to Rome,” others almost completely unknown. Some found fame on their conversion, others suffered greatly for their zeal for the one true fold of Christ. Some came into the Church relatively early in life, others entered at the final hour, even while on their death bed.Taken altogether these accounts provide a profound and moving witness to the operation of divine grace in human souls. Marcus Grodi is host of EWTN’s The Journey Home, president of the Coming Home Network International. Joseph Pearce is editor of the Saint Austin Review and author of many books. Now in stock.
