The Extraordinary Form of the Mass Explained

The Extraordinary Form of the Mass Explained
An introduction to the traditional form of the Mass. In his letter, Summorum Pontificum, Pope Benedict XVI confirmed the lasting positive contribution that the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass can and should make to the Liturgy of the whole Church. This booklet explains the motivations behind his letter, and gives a brief history of the Mass, so that those attending the Traditional Latin Mass can have some idea of its development over the centuries. It also offers a short commentary on the structure of the Extraordinary Form of the Mass, which may help those attending this liturgy for the first time. [more details...]

The Celebration of Mass

The Celebration of Mass   Rev J B OConnell
After having been out of print for over 30 years, this indispensable rubrical resource for the traditional Roman Liturgy has finally been reprinted! Author of several liturgically-related works, J.B. O'Connell is noted for his ability to clearly explain the complex ceremonial workings of the Roman Rite, particularly for the celebration of Mass by the priest. The Celebration of Mass is valued by clergy and laity alike not only for its concise handling of the general rubrics, but also for its chapters that briefly describe the history of the development of the traditional Roman Mass, liturgical law, the proper understanding of the force of custom, the importance of the decisions made by the Sacred Congregation of Rites and the opinions of fellow rubricians. O'Connell's last revision made of The Celebration of Mass was printed in 1964 after a span of nearly 10 years from his last edition, making it one of the few rubrical books completely in conformity with the new code of rubrics implemented in 1960 that comprise the 1962 edition of the Missale Romanum. Fully indexed and beautifully hardbound in dark green with gold embossing on the cover and spine, with a red marking ribbon. This is a must for any enthusiast of the Church's sacred liturgy. The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy - hardback

The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy - hardback   Fr. Adrian Fortescue
The English classic on the historical development of the ancient Roman Mass, sometimes referred to as the "Tridentine Latin Mass". This is a high-quality hardback reprint of the 1930 printing, which though a newer impression from the original 1912 edition, in substance differs from the first only by the preface to the second edition. As one can read in the Editor’s Preface, this title was initially part of The Westminister Library collection, a series of “handbooks” that were compiled to assist priests and students better understand the various elements of their Catholic Faith, primarily in matters theological. Fr. Adrian Fortescue (1874–1923), was an English Roman Catholic priest and scholar, a noted linguist and lecturer, a painter and calligrapher, an organist and composer of hymns, and an archeologist and liturgical expert in both the Western and Eastern Rites. Recipient of the rarely bestowed ecclesiastical triple doctorate, friends and parishioners alike called him “the Doctor”, in tribute to his genius and multitude of talents. [more details...]

A Privilege of the Ordained

A Privilege of the Ordained   Michael Davies
This booklet presents the truth about Communion in the hand. Our Lord said at the Last Supper “This Is My Body”. Pope John Paul II at one time reminded us that: “To touch the Sacred Species, and to distribute them with their own hands, is a privilege of the ordained one.” This booklet shows that at a time of decreasing respect for the Blessed Sacrament, every Catholic should insist upon receiving the Host in the traditional manner. Nothing could be clearer and simpler than the scheme of this 1932 book: it encapsulates every "Old-Mass" ceremony that occurs in the course of the year succinctly, precisely, and completely, telling the sacristan what he must do to prepare for the ceremony: what vestments to lay out, how to lay them out, how to prepare the altar, and what special features each particular ceremony contains. Fr. William A. OBrien, pastor, teacher, and liturgy expert, defines every term and provides easy-to-understand illustrations and diagrams.

A complete guide to traditional Catholic ceremony:

  • Seven things you need when Holy Communion is distributed outside of Mass
  • The use of the oil case, and the meaning of its three separate compartments labeled O. C., S. C., and O. I.

  • The altar: the raised structure of wood or stone on which the Mass is celebrated? Not precisely
  • What you must do, if the priest asks you to prepare the chalice: five steps
  • Arrangement of vestments in the sacristy: celebrant, deacon, and subdeacon
  • How to prepare the sacristy, the altar, and the credence table for a sung Mass (Missacantata)
  • Ten steps to prepare the altar for Benediction and Exposition

Prayers and Ceremonies of Holy Mass

Prayers and Ceremonies of Holy Mass   Dom Prosper Gueranger
Taken from the Notes Made at the Conferences of Dom Prosper Gueranger, Abbot of Solesmes. Translated from the French by Rev. Dom Laurence Shepherd, Monk of the English Benedictine Congregation, St. Mary’s Abbey, Stanbrook—June 14, 1885. An excerpt from Prayers and Ceremonies of Holy Mass on the incensing of the altar… "The Altar represents our Lord Jesus Christ. The Saints’ Relics which are there, remind us that the Saints are His members. For, having assumed our human nature, He not only suffered His Passion, triumphed in His Resurrection, and entered into His glory by the Ascension, – but He, also, founded the Church upon earth, and this Church is His mystical Body; He is its Head, and the Saints are its members. From this point of view, then, our Lord has not the fullness of His mystical Body without His Saints; and it is for this reason, that the Saints, who are reigning with Him in glory, are united with Him, in the Altar, which represents Him...The Priest, having finished the prayer, which he said bowing down, and his hands joined on the Altar, prepares for its Incensing...Holy Church has borrowed this ceremony from heaven itself; where St. John witnessed it. In his Apocalypse, he saw an Angel, standing, with a golden censer, near the Altar, on which was the Lamb, with four-and-twenty elders around him. (Apoc. viii. 3.) He describes this Angel to us, as offering to God the prayers of the Saints, which are symbolised by the incense. " Large format: 8.5" x 11", laminated, glossy pages. [more details...]

The Mass of All Time

The Mass of All Time   Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre    NEW
"During the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, revelation, the mysteries of Faith, the mysteries of the Incarnation and the Redemption, are made real. From the Mass, the liturgical and unbloody re-presentation of Christ's sacrifice on the Cross, the efficacy of all good works proceeds." - Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The Mass of All Time is a collection of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre's sermons, classes and notes on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass...a compendium of what he taught on the Mass - its rites, spirit, prayers, theology, spirituality, and grace. Many of these texts have never been published before. Fr. Patrick Troadec, rector of the Society of St. Pius X's seminary in Flavigny, France, collected and organized the Archbishop's manifold writings and speeches on the Mass and presents them here, in two parts. Part one is a running commentary, gleaned from all the works of the Archbishop, on the prayers, parts and actions of the liturgy. Part two covers the New Order of Mass promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969 and includes commentary on liturgical history, the liturgical revolution and the history of the SSPX's defense of the old and rejection of the new. Again, the words are those of Archbishop Lefebvre, woven together by Fr. Troadec. The Archbishop is known for his defense of the Tridentine Mass but never before have his insights been collected in such an accessible and complete format. Especially now, with a renewed interest in the "extraordinary form" due to the Holy Father's motu proprio, this book is ideally timed because it is primarily a "positive" book coming from him who is too often known as the "Rebel" or "Renegade" Archbishop. Here we see the love and depth of understanding that Marcel Lefebvre had for the Mass of all time. Polemics are not excluded, but they take a back seat in this volume. With the release of the motu proprio, it seems there has never been a more ideal time for traditionalists AND those new to the "Old" Mass to see this side of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre...indeed, the more important side as it was his love of truth and the Mass as handed on to him that fueled his battle to defend it. The Mass

The Mass   Fr. Joseph Dunney

Loaded with examples from Holy Scripture and the lives of the saints, Fr. Dunney applies the lessons of the Mass to help you grow in virtue and character for a fuller spiritual life. More importantly, he will lead you to a true participation in the Mass, which is nothing less than the union of the soul with Christ as He represents on the altar the Sacrifice of Calvary. The Liturgical Altar

The Liturgical Altar
This brief, but comprehensive work presents a supernatural approach to understanding the center of Catholic life, the altar. Considered by some to be “the bible” on the subject of the altar, this book covers its historical development, form, symbolism, and vesting, as well as it appurtenances, such as the cross, candles, use of flowers and reliquaries. "This book is also an inestimable resource from a practical aspect, in so far as it demonstrates how to construct a proper altar that conforms to the Church’s prescriptions and ideals without exhausting the parish coffers." Mr. Webb’s magnificently composed text is complimented with pictorial examples of altars and line drawings that demonstrate how to implement what he outlines. A timeless classic, this book will be of great general interest to any Catholic, lay or cleric, particularly church architects, liturgical artists, sacristans, those involved in liturgical functions, altar and rosary sodalities, florists, altar vesture manufactures, as well as religion teachers for all ages. Second edition, 1948. [more details...]

Candles in the Roman Rite

Candles in the Roman Rite   Rev Edwin Ryan, DD
This fascinating book on the use of candles in the Roman liturgy was previously difficult to obtain secondhand. In addition to explaining the ancient use and symbolisms of candles, Fr. Edwin Ryan (a noteworthy American liturgist) outlines the various liturgical rules for candles. This work is also unique and interesting for its wonderful illustrations by Terence J. Hughes and James R. Howard. There are nine illustrations in all (four in beautiful watercolor and the remainder in black and white) which depict liturgically-correct altars properly vested with antependiums and conopaeums (even with some optional riddel curtains), and decorated with candles and flowers the Roman way. Though ostensibly produced to sell candles, the book serves as an excellent example of the Liturgical Movement’s efforts in the United States to promote authentic practices of the Roman Rite against commonplace abuses and unbecoming expressions of liturgical art. Reproduced as a high-quality softcover edition, a special natural-colored stock with a semi-sheen finish was used for the text, while the original vibrancy of the watercolor drawings was accurately recaptured. Fully indexed and includes a table of contents, this book is a perfect reference for general interest, altar sodalities, sacristans, seminaries, catechism classes, and Catholic libraries. 3rd edition; 1937 (Reprinted 2009), 11 x 8.5 inches. A fascinating book that will give you a new perspective on the Mass: 1)The Confiteor: Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do. 2) The Offertory: Amen I say to thee, this day thou shalt be with me in paradise. 3) The Sanctus: Woman, behold thy Son...Behold thy mother. 4) The Consecration: My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me! 5) The Communion: I thirst; 6) Ite, Missa Est: It is finished. 7) The Last Gospel: Father, into Thy hands I commend my Spirit. Bishop Sheen says, "Hence the Mass is to us the crowning act of Christian worship. A pulpit in which the words of our Lord are repeated does not unite us to Him; a choir in which sweet sentiments are sung brings us no closer to His Cross than to His garments. A temple without an altar of sacrifice is non-existent among primitive peoples, and is meaningless among Christians. And so in the Catholic Church the altar, and not the pulpit or the choir or the organ, is the center of worship, for there is re - enacted the memorial of His Passion." (from the Prologue).
