Mariam, affectionately known as "the Little Arab", was beatified by Pope St. John Paul II in 1983, and named patroness of Peace in the Holy Land. In her early life in Palestine, she was miraculously cured by the Blessed Virgin Mary after having had her throat slashed by an enraged young man for refusing to convert to Islam. She became a Carmelite, suffering the stigmata, and experienced daily religious ecstasies. Conversation of Blessed Mary during an ecstasy: I ask the Most High, "Where do you dwell?" He answers, "Each day I have a new dwelling, a new birth in a cave, in a lowly abode. I am happy in a lowly soul, in a crib."
